Hello everyone,

I have a KALLAX shelf from IKEA standing on my hardwood floor. Unfortunately, I noticed that the shelf keeps slipping slightly whenever I take items out or use it. This is not only annoying but also potentially dangerous, as the shelf could tip over.

The floor is quite smooth, and I suspect the problem is due to the lack of grip. So far, I haven’t tried any adhesive pads or similar solutions.

How can I prevent the KALLAX shelf from sliding on a smooth hardwood floor? Are there specific solutions or materials that I can safely use without damaging the floor or the shelf?

I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Attach hook-and-loop tape (Velcro) under the feet or use non-slip rubber pads. This instantly provides better grip and can be removed without leaving any residue.

First, it is important to understand exactly how the shelf is resting on the floor. Wooden floorboards are often either varnished or oiled, which can worsen this issue.

My recommendation is to use not just simple rubber pads, but thicker felt or anti-slip pads specifically designed for wood or floorboards, which have a rubberized underside. These prevent slipping and protect the floor from scratches.

Alternatively, silicone "floor grips" are an option, as their special structure further enhances stability.

Please ensure that the adhesives do not contain harsh solvents that could damage the floor. It is advisable to test them on an inconspicuous spot before applying.

Another possibility is to place a thin, non-slip rug pad between the floor and the shelf. This provides additional grip and protects the floor over time.

Have you already checked whether the shelf is level or if uneven spots in the floor might be contributing to the problem? Small leveling wedges made of wood or plastic could help compensate for that.

I am also curious about the size of the shelf and how heavily it will be loaded, as this significantly influences the choice of anti-slip measures.

That’s a really good tip! I’d like to add my experience:

If the KALLAX shelf slips, it’s usually due to very smooth feet and a smooth floor surface. It’s important that the floor is clean and dry before applying anything.

With similar furniture, I’ve often used self-adhesive anti-slip pads, which you can buy at hardware stores or online. These are usually made of soft rubber and work immediately.

There are also special furniture glides with rubber coating that can be screwed on, especially if the shelf already has plastic feet underneath. These are very effective at preventing slipping as well.

If you want to avoid having to remove adhesive residue in the long run, a thin rubber mat about 2 mm (0.08 inches) thick that can be cut to size is worth considering. This works just as well and protects the floor.

If the shelf is a bit uneven, a combination of small shims in the corners together with anti-slip pads can help optimize contact with the floor.

Good luck! It’s really frustrating when furniture slides around – but you’re not alone with that. 🙂
