Hello everyone,
I have a fairly specific question for the community: How do you combine the KALLAX shelving unit from Ikea with window sills? Specifically, I’m interested in how you handle the space above the KALLAX when the unit is placed directly against or underneath a window sill. Are there practical tips on how to make the most of this space without the sill getting in the way or significantly limiting functionality? Do you use additional shelves, fixings, or even turn the window sill into a storage surface with an extra KALLAX shelf below? I find this topic interesting because this area often goes unused, despite having a lot of potential. Looking forward to hearing about your experiences!

I pushed my KALLAX directly under the windowsill and also placed a small wooden shelf on topThat sounds charming at first, but isn’t there a risk that moisture from the windowsill could affect the wood in the KALLAX and cause it to swell? Especially with older windows or during winter, I think some form of protection is very important here.
How exactly do you prevent damage to the shelf and KALLAX? Maybe with special sealing or spacers between the windowsill and the shelf? I wouldn’t underestimate these factors.

Additionally, I placed small rubber buffers between the windowsill and the KALLAX to reduce contact and thus minimize moisture transfer. The wood of the KALLAX is also treated with a protective clear varnish.
A simple precaution that makes a big difference! I recommend everyone take these little extra steps to ensure long-lasting enjoyment.
