Hello everyone,

I have a fairly specific question for the community: How do you combine the KALLAX shelving unit from Ikea with window sills? Specifically, I’m interested in how you handle the space above the KALLAX when the unit is placed directly against or underneath a window sill. Are there practical tips on how to make the most of this space without the sill getting in the way or significantly limiting functionality? Do you use additional shelves, fixings, or even turn the window sill into a storage surface with an extra KALLAX shelf below? I find this topic interesting because this area often goes unused, despite having a lot of potential. Looking forward to hearing about your experiences!

This situation is somewhat tricky because the standard dimensions of KALLAX units and window sills rarely match perfectly. I have noticed that many people simply place objects on the window sill without carefully checking the gap to the KALLAX. This often reduces storage space and interferes with opening mechanisms.

In my opinion, the first step should be to precisely measure the clearance between the top edge of the KALLAX and the window sill. If there is too little space, a custom adjustment may be necessary, such as fitting shelves tailored to the gap or using thinner intermediate panels. An important consideration is ensuring secure anchoring; otherwise, the setup will be unstable.

Does anyone have studies or practical experience on how much clearance is recommended to maintain good access to both the KALLAX compartments and the window sill?

That is exactly the most important step: precise measurement. KALLAX is approximately 147 cm (58 inches) tall for the large shelf with 8 compartments, or 77 cm (30 inches) for the smaller one. In Germany, windowsills are usually about 2.5 to 3 cm (1 to 1.2 inches) thick and, depending on the window type including wall plaster, are typically positioned at a height between 90 and 100 cm (35 to 39 inches).

In practice, this means the KALLAX unit usually fits exactly or just below the windowsill, where the actual difference is crucial for the feeling of storage space.

My tip: If the windowsill overhangs, small spacers or shelf inserts can be used to bridge the gap between the windowsill and the KALLAX. Alternatively, the windowsill can be used as an extra shelf if the window isn’t hung too low.

A baseboard attached to the bottom of the KALLAX also helps prevent scratches when sliding it on the floor.

I always position my KALLAX so that the windowsill remains completely clear. There is about a 5-7 cm (2-3 inches) gap between the windowsill and the shelf to make good use of the compartments.

Sometimes I place narrow shelves on top that are adjusted to fit the windowsill. This creates additional storage space.

A brief guide:

1. Measuring: Accurately determine the height of the windowsill and the KALLAX unit.

2. Choosing the distance: Leave at least 5 cm (2 inches) between the top edge of the KALLAX and the windowsill to keep the compartments easily accessible.

3. Installation: If using intermediate shelves, make sure they are securely fastened. Screws through the KALLAX and into the masonry are often necessary.

4. Practical tip: If the windowsill is very deep, it can serve as a shelf above the KALLAX, for example, to hold plants or decorations.

5. Avoid direct pressure on the KALLAX from the windowsill, as this can cause damage to the furniture.

6. In very tight spaces: A thinner KALLAX frame or a slightly modified model might help.

Many people forget to consider the load-bearing capacity of both the windowsill and the shelving unit.

This is awesome, discovering so many tips here! 🙂 I slid my KALLAX unit right under the windowsill and also placed a small wooden shelf on top. This way, I make full use of both levels and at the same time have a practical seating spot by the window.

Of course, you need to measure carefully, but it’s definitely worth it! The windowsill and KALLAX work perfectly together as storage. I even have plants on the windowsill and on the left side of the shelf – really cozy!

Give it a try, I can only recommend it! :-)
