Hello everyone,

I have an IKEA Malm bed and want to remove the handles because I plan to replace them with others. I am looking for a detailed and reliable guide on how to dismantle the Malm handles, ideally with tips on what to watch out for to avoid damaging the furniture. The handles don’t seem to simply unscrew, so I am a bit cautious about applying too much force.

Has anyone had experience removing the Malm handles or can recommend specific steps? Are there any special tools that work particularly well?

Thanks in advance for any helpful advice!

Hello Besobe,

That’s right, Malm handles can usually be removed by loosening an internal hex screw. You need to loosen the screw on the inside of the furniture piece – it is often accessible from the drawer or the back.

It’s important to carefully unscrew this with a well-fitting Allen key to avoid damaging the threads. There are no glued or additionally fastened parts, so the removal should be straightforward.

It’s best to take your time and work methodically – if you hurry or use too much force, the holes could be damaged. If you don’t have the tool, a set of Allen keys, which you can find at any hardware store, will be sufficient.

I hope this helps you.

Simply open the drawer, insert the Allen key, loosen the screws, and pull off the handle. Nothing complicated.

That’s brilliant! 🙂 We often overcomplicate such simple tasks!

I’ve done this myself and can confirm: taking your time makes it really easy. Once you’ve removed the handle, the drawer feels like new.

A small tip: keep the screws in a safe place, or they’ll easily get lost. Good luck with your DIY! 🙂

It’s interesting that this is supposed to be so simple. However, I remain skeptical whether this applies to all Malm handles.

I have read elsewhere that sometimes the handles are glued or the screws are concealed to improve the appearance. That would be typical IKEA: appearance prioritized over repairability.

I also wonder if the official instructions from IKEA are available – that would be the most reliable source.

Perhaps it’s worth questioning whether this standardized design is really user-friendly when there are so many uncertainties with such a simple handle.
