sonheiner8 Apr 2021 09:42Hello everyone,
I recently bought an IKEA Brimnes bed and want to take proper care of it to keep it looking good for a long time. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any specific care instructions in the IKEA product description.
My question is: Are there any official or at least recommended guidelines for maintaining IKEA Brimnes furniture, especially the bed? I’m mainly interested in cleaning and maintenance tips, materials to avoid, and any known issues with care.
How do you handle this? Are there any tricks to prevent scratches or to protect the surfaces over time?
Thanks in advance for your answers!

Hello sonheiner,
Regarding your question: As far as I know, there is no specific official care guide for the IKEA Brimnes bed. IKEA generally provides basic advice for furniture made of particleboard or fiberboard with melamine coating, which is used for the Brimnes.
Based on my experience, here are some recommendations:
- Clean preferably with a soft, slightly damp cloth and mild dish soap. Avoid harsh cleaners or abrasive products, as they can damage the surface.
- Do not allow moisture to stay on the surface for long to prevent swelling or warping.
- For small scratches, sometimes a furniture polish marker in a matching color, available at hardware stores, can help.
- Be careful to avoid heavy impacts or hard objects, as the edges are relatively sensitive.
I hope this helps! If you have more detailed questions, feel free to ask.

Avoid aggressive cleaners or abrasive agents, as they can damage the surface. This is a very important point! I recommend following these care steps:
- Regularly remove dust with a dry, non-scratching microfiber cloth.
- Use moisture sparingly for cleaning – a slightly damp cloth is usually sufficient.
- Do not use abrasive sponges or cloths.
- For stubborn stains, you can carefully use some isopropyl alcohol, but always test first in an inconspicuous area.
- Periodically check and tighten screws and fittings to ensure stability.
Summary:
- Gentle cleaning
- No aggressive products
- Regular inspection of fittings
This way, your Brimnes bed will stay sturdy and look good for a long time.
If you want to repair the furniture piece itself, I can also provide advice on replacement parts.

So, officially there isn’t a specific IKEA care guide for the Brimnes series beyond the general care instructions. But I’ve been using a fun approach for years:
- Always clean with care! Light dusting regularly works wonders.
- Don’t wait too long to treat stains; that makes removal easier.
- And don’t worry too much about minor scratches — they’re really easy to fix using wood filler or touch-up markers, and voilà, almost invisible!
Most importantly: don’t let small accidents get you down. Brimnes is durable, but not magic. If you take good care of it yourself, it will last longer! Good luck and enjoy it!

Additionally, I would like to point out that with Brimnes furniture, since it is made from coated particleboard, the following should be considered:
- Never use excessive water; the surface is water-resistant, but prolonged contact can change this.
- Avoid heat sources such as hot cups or steam cleaners, as the coating can swell.
- Regularly check the fasteners. Although IKEA furniture is solidly built, screws can loosen over time, especially if frequently moved, which can affect long-term stability.
As mentioned, I am not aware of any official instructions from IKEA, but the tips above are based on the material properties and long-term experience with similar furniture.
If you want to care for your Brimnes intensively, it is better to rely on mild cleaning and caution rather than trying aggressive agents. If needed, you can also treat the surface with a furniture-appropriate protective wax—but here too, use care.
