LEO-WULFRA13 Jun 2024 09:37Hello everyone,
I am currently considering using a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA outdoors on my terrace to store gardening tools and other items. However, a key question for me is: Will the KALLAX be significantly damaged if exposed to wind, rain, and fluctuating temperatures outside?
I am particularly interested in how durable the coated particleboard is, whether moisture can quickly penetrate it, and if the surfaces deteriorate noticeably after a relatively short time due to UV exposure.
Perhaps someone here has experience or tips on how to keep the shelving unit stable and looking good in the long term if it is not fully covered. I look forward to your opinions!

Hi LEO-WULFRA,
completely understandable concerns! Using KALLAX outdoors… that’s a tricky one! 😊 The panels are actually designed for indoor use and don’t have a durable protective layer against constant moisture or direct sunlight. Especially when rain and UV rays occur together, the material tends to swell quickly, or the color may start to peel.
I can confirm exactly that—I once had a KALLAX in the garage, where it got a lot of sun during summer, and after a few months it looked really worn.
But hey, if the shelf is well protected—like on a covered balcony or brought inside during bad weather—it can last quite a while. A waterproof coating or similar could improve its durability.
So: not ideal, but doable with some caution. Good luck with your project! 🙂

Hello everyone,
I fully agree with bauku here, but I would like to go into more detail regarding the material properties.
KALLAX furniture is made from medium-density fiberboard (MDF) or particleboard with a melamine resin coating. This coating provides good moisture resistance indoors but is not completely waterproof. With constant moisture or direct exposure to water, moisture will inevitably penetrate at the edges and other vulnerable areas. This causes the material to swell, warp, or chip.
Additionally, UV radiation can cause the surface to fade and gradually make the melamine resin layer brittle. Especially if the furniture is exposed to little or no overhead protection, its lifespan will be greatly reduced.
As a precaution, I recommend:
- Placing the shelving unit in a well-protected location whenever possible.
- Regularly treating the surface with water-repellent products (such as varnishes or oils).
- Using an appropriate cover when not in use.
- Alternatively, replacing the shelving unit with more durable outdoor furniture if it is constantly exposed to wind and weather.
If you still want to use the shelving unit outdoors, these precautions are essential.
Best regards!

Good morning everyone!
I’ve had my KALLAX on a covered veranda for about a year now. It’s not completely outdoors, but still without any additional protective measures.
That is absolutely true! After about six months, the edges were slightly swollen in some spots—very subtle, but noticeable. Since then, I’ve treated the vulnerable areas with a special wood sealant, and it looks much more stable now.
I can only recommend this. After reapplying treatment, the KALLAX looks great and continues to hold up well. Of course, it’s not a piece of furniture designed specifically for outdoor use, but with some care, you can definitely enjoy it. And yes, having a covered space is really valuable.
So: use outdoors is possible, but not without maintenance and protective measures. Always keep in mind that KALLAX was intended for indoor use. Still, I wish you lots of success and enjoyment with it! 😉
