ᐅ Is full-surface drywall finishing absolutely necessary?

Hello,
We are currently building and I have a question: do the walls need to be fully skim-coated before wallpapering and painting? We were planning to limit the work to the edges and joints since the walls are otherwise very smooth.

Is that sufficient?

What do you want to put on it? Textured wallpaper or just paint?

If you prefer it smooth, then leave it as is.

The textured wallpaper at the top and bottom will probably be fleece-backed wallpaper or a decorative textured wallpaper.

With painter’s fleece, you will probably have to apply filler by the third coat unless you don’t mind the joints being visible under grazing light.
