ᐅ Is an Additional Meter Required for the Heat Pump When a Photovoltaic System Is Installed?

Hello. I am considering whether to have separate meters for our heat pump and our photovoltaic system, as well as for the household electricity consumption.

Originally, I planned to use our system to support the heat pump and also consume a lot of solar power within the house, so only one meter. However, my electrician is now making me unsure and suggests having separate meters.

Yes, the metering concept must be supported by the network operator. It is not related to the electricity tariff.

Thank you, Netzbetreiber. That was the word I was missing.

Hi,

What do you think about the solution with two meters, where you use the heat pump electricity tariff and at the same time operate the heat pump with photovoltaics? I understand this is already possible in some cases.
Not really much, because
1. this so-called cascade metering must be supported by your grid operator
2. if it is supported, you will face significantly higher costs, which may reduce the profitability of self-consumption to zero or even make it negative.

Then there is the rollout of smart meters
1. Since your photovoltaic system is over 7 kWp, you will be required to have a smart meter installed. That means about €60 instead of the current approximately €12. With cascade metering, your heat pump will also be required to have a smart meter due to the heat pump tariff (interruptible loads and similar reasons).

Therefore: with a reasonably low heat demand, which is usually the case in new builds, the heat pump tariff will generally increase the costs rather than reduce them. Because of the mandatory smart meters, these costs will likely increase further in the future. That’s why it’s better to have just one meter from the start, without much discussion with the distribution system operator, etc.

Thank you for the feedback. I have decided on one meter. Additionally, another meter on a DIN rail to measure the consumption of the heat pump for the BAFA subsidy.
