ᐅ Smart Meter – Still Not a Standard Feature in New Construction?

On Monday, our electricity meter was installed (NetzeBW). Since this is a new build and we have installed a photovoltaic system and an air-to-water heat pump, I assumed that the network operator would automatically install the latest generation electricity meter—a smart meter. Not the case. A regular digital meter is installed in the electrical cabinet.
How is it with you? We would be willing to pay higher meter fees; that wouldn’t be an issue. However, we weren’t even offered a smart meter.
Do you have to specifically request a smart meter from the utility provider? Are there any additional costs involved?
Do smart meters have any disadvantages (apart from higher fees)?

mME were installed here and no smart meter, which I’m glad about. Why should I pay 80€ (about 87 USD) more in meter fees? I don’t benefit from that at all.
Our household is actually designated for an upgrade by definition. As far as I know, the utility provider can’t even supply those devices. They have zero interest in this kind of technical gimmick, and if they do install it, it won’t provide any added value because it’s easier to keep the interfaces sealed off.

What are you hoping to achieve by installing it? Hmm..., that I can get detailed information about my electricity consumption and optimize it better...
One argument against it is: "The electricity provider can throttle the power consumption."
Has anyone here installed a smart meter and can explain the advantages and disadvantages?
We had an APOX+ from APATOR installed.
Does anyone know this meter?
With smart meters, you can take advantage of variable electricity tariffs like Tibber or Awattar and optimize your electricity consumption for periods with lower electricity costs.
There are many members here in the forum who put a tremendous amount of effort into optimizing their heat pump consumption based on photovoltaic generation. Combined with variable electricity tariffs, you could also intentionally use electricity at night or charge your electric vehicle when the sun is shining and the wind is blowing on a Sunday. Since 2023, this could have saved a lot of money. Last August, many paid significantly more.
With the electricity meter, you would have the option for "self-determined" electricity cost management – moving away from the all-inclusive solution that is standard today.
In any case, I find it very interesting. However, I have only seen the claim that the smart meters installed here allow for remote disconnection – unlike the preset restriction periods on a heat pump meter.

Using these terms helps reduce confusion.

hm..., that I have detailed information about my electricity consumption and can optimize it better...You can achieve that with a Sunny Home Manager or similar devices from other manufacturers. Then you also get a web interface where you can view the data graphically. In my opinion, a standard electricity meter is not designed for that purpose.
I would also sleep more peacefully knowing that my utility provider cannot accidentally cut off my power. How utility companies cope with "modern gadgets" should be well known by now. 😀
