Is a roof overhang of 50cm (20 inches) sufficient to protect the facade from weather and rain? It concerns a gable roof house with an eaves height of 3.80m (12.5 feet) and a brick veneer facade. Unfortunately, a larger overhang is very difficult due to building regulations. Is it possible to execute it this way?

We have a bungalow with a 50cm (20 inch) roof overhang. We find that it’s perfectly sufficient. You can always have more, and when the wind and rain come from the west, as they are now, it will of course also hit the facade. But with brick cladding, you are even better protected there. I think this is enough. 😉

1. You don’t necessarily have to protect the facade. It can last 50 years without any roof overhang.
2. Brick veneer does not need protection by default.
3. For normal rain, 50cm (20 inches) is enough.
4. With current weather conditions and wind, even 100cm (40 inches) can be insufficient.

Finally, what exactly concerns you about weather and rain? Your roof – I assume it is covered with tiles (fired clay or concrete) – also isn’t protected by an overhang.

Then you are dealing with reality, not with wishful thinking.
50cm (20 inches) is enough.

We bought a 5-year-old KfW 55 energy-efficient house. The attic space is unoccupied but insulated because the previous owner installed a gas heating system there. The upper floor is finished and lived in.

You want to extend the roof overhang purely out of fear that the builder of your five-year-old house might have cut corners on essentials (which he certainly did not, given the KfW 55 standard)?

I have to have them shortened because the construction workers were too incompetent to read and correctly follow the original plan, you smart aleck. Unfortunately, the building authority stopped by to inspect some ongoing renovation work on the building.
