Hello everyone.
I bought a gabion element with the dimensions Depth x Width x Height: 30cm (12 inches) x 100cm (39 inches) x 150cm (59 inches).
In terms of height, I actually want just over 100cm (39 inches), but the next available size was 150cm (59 inches).
My plan is to dig a trench matching the dimensions of the gabion basket and to embed it approximately 40cm (16 inches) into the ground.
I have two questions.
1. Should I place the basket on, for example, 30x30cm (12x12 inches) paving stones to create a stable base, or is compacted clay soil sufficient?
2. Is it enough to refill the hole with clay soil, or should I create a concrete foundation, similar to what is done for fence posts?

The question is whether the basket will stand on its own or if it is meant to retain soil. I wouldn’t install it without a proper foundation. You could embed the basket by pouring concrete around it. But I wouldn’t place it directly into the ground. To me, the risk of it leaning or sinking would be much too high.
Oh, no, the basket is not meant to be a starting point. It stands freely and is only for visual purposes.
My plan is to embed the basket as well. Optionally, I could also cast in two steel pipes and slip the basket over the pipes.
I’ll probably have to test that. I’ve ordered two more baskets measuring 30cm x 30cm (12 inches x 12 inches) and will start with those.
