Hello everyone.

I bought a gabion element with the dimensions Depth x Width x Height: 30cm (12 inches) x 100cm (39 inches) x 150cm (59 inches).

In terms of height, I actually want just over 100cm (39 inches), but the next available size was 150cm (59 inches).

My plan is to dig a trench matching the dimensions of the gabion basket and to embed it approximately 40cm (16 inches) into the ground.

I have two questions.

1. Should I place the basket on, for example, 30x30cm (12x12 inches) paving stones to create a stable base, or is compacted clay soil sufficient?
2. Is it enough to refill the hole with clay soil, or should I create a concrete foundation, similar to what is done for fence posts?

Hello Roland,
what loads are expected? Will the basket be backfilled?
With a depth of only 30cm (12 inches) and a maximum height of 150cm (59 inches), quite a lot of pressure can build up.

To be honest, I haven’t really thought about which stones I will use or how many kilograms or tons that will be.

What is meant by "Will the basket be backfilled?"
Is it about whether the back will be secured or fixed from behind?

The question is whether the basket will stand on its own or if it is meant to retain soil. I wouldn’t install it without a proper foundation. You could embed the basket by pouring concrete around it. But I wouldn’t place it directly into the ground. To me, the risk of it leaning or sinking would be much too high.

Oh, no, the basket is not meant to be a starting point. It stands freely and is only for visual purposes.

My plan is to embed the basket as well. Optionally, I could also cast in two steel pipes and slip the basket over the pipes.

I’ll probably have to test that. I’ve ordered two more baskets measuring 30cm x 30cm (12 inches x 12 inches) and will start with those.

You should definitely create a proper foundation beneath it and anchor the basket with appropriate rebar in the foundation.
What do the manufacturer's technical instructions say about correct installation?
