Hello,
I am planning to install a 3.4m (11 ft) wide sliding door to the terrace as part of a renovation. Since I am a bit of a "fresh air enthusiast," especially in the summer, this door will be open a lot.
I am currently considering an external venetian blind (I am still debating between a roller shutter or a venetian blind).
Now I am wondering how to implement insect protection. Are there any casings for venetian blinds that include a mesh screen? Is that even practical, considering you can only operate it from the inside? Also, you would have to raise it almost completely to walk through the door.
I think I have seen side-mounted mesh screens somewhere before. Are those more practical and do they work well, or do they cause issues with operation? I would prefer a solution that remains invisible when not needed. I don’t like the idea of a “door” that you slide to the side and which always stands in front of the fixed part of the sliding door.
Has anyone solved something like this and can give me some advice?

I have pleated retractable insect screens from Neher installed on the side-opening sliding doors, and I am very satisfied with them. They slide open and closed easily and are hardly noticeable when fully retracted. Of course, you will always see the frame or cassette, but that doesn’t bother me. They also work well in combination with venetian blinds and/or roller shutters (I have both on one door).
Due to their pleated design, they are more visible when closed than regular sliding screen frames, but I don’t find that problematic. It’s something you should check out for yourself beforehand.

Thank you for your feedback. How does the sliding side door perform in everyday use? I have also read that Neher apparently offers very good quality. The mechanism should operate smoothly and without sticking, even if children might push it at a lower height.
If I plan to install such a system, it will be mounted independently of the window. Is there anything special to consider regarding the windows? Is it then installed between the window and the external venetian blind / roller shutter?

It is installed in the overhang of the fixed section, so it is level with the fixed glass pane. Roller shutters and venetian blinds run in front of it (i.e., “outside” of it).
In everyday use, I find it much more comfortable than a fixed sliding frame, as those often get stuck. Another advantage is that it stays much cleaner for longer (dust, pollen, etc.) because when not in use, it folds up neatly and is stored away. I have had to vacuum the fixed window grilles twice already, but not the pleated blinds.
