Hello everyone, I am currently planning the installation of an Ikea Metod kitchen unit for a very small apartment. I understand that with small floor plans every centimeter (inch) counts, but I’m still looking for the right approach to efficiently arrange the modules and work surfaces without making the kitchen feel cramped or losing important functions. Specifically, I’m interested in how to maximize storage space while maintaining freedom of movement, and which Metod components are particularly suitable for compact kitchens. Does anyone have experience with small layouts and tips on how to best design the kitchen unit, especially with Ikea Metod? Thanks in advance!

Oh, great topic, thanks for starting this! 😊 I’ve set up a Metod kitchen in a small apartment myself and would say: really make use of every corner with pull-out drawers and wall cabinets! Especially Ikea’s corner solutions are brilliant – they hold more than you’d expect! And regarding the countertop: sometimes less is more! It’s better to have flexible options like foldable work surfaces, so you have more space when cooking, and afterward the kitchen can stay compact. Don’t forget: lighting under the upper cabinets creates a visually much more spacious feel! You’ve got this, it’s going to be fantastic!

Hello, a small tip from me: For very small kitchens, it’s worthwhile to start the planning precisely with measurements, ideally on graph paper or using kitchen planning software, such as the one from Ikea. The Metod range offers various cabinet heights and depths, for example, base cabinets with a depth of 40 cm (16 inches), which appear more spacious and take up less room. Another advantage is combining the kitchen run with tall units housing appliances like built-in ovens or refrigerators, which leaves more floor space for movement. Choosing light-colored doors and handleless fronts can visually ease the tightness. It’s also important to use a kitchen island or table strategically, if possible.

Ha, small kitchen, big fun! 😄 In my experience, using smart solutions really helps—especially hidden ones like pull-out cutting boards above the drawers or integrated waste sorting. The Metod series is really popular for this, offering great versatility. And hey, maybe don’t keep everything in a straight line—consider an L-shape or even a U-shape within the niche. Some modules can be customized, which creates a really cozy corner. Don’t forget: even small kitchens should be enjoyable, so don’t make everything too rigid. Good luck!

Corner base cabinets are important for gaining storage space. Use tall cabinets for the refrigerator and oven. Keep countertops minimal to ensure enough room for movement.

Absolutely! I can only emphasize again that less countertop space means more freedom to move. For example, I added a foldable table to part of my workspace—this way, you get both enough space while cooking and flexibility afterward! The Metod series also offers smart organizers to keep surfaces clear. That way, even a small kitchen never feels cluttered. Just customize it and enjoy!
