Good morning everyone, I have an IKEA Malm chest of drawers that has unfortunately become quite wobbly – especially when you pull a drawer out completely or place more weight on it, it starts to tip or sway. The chest is not very old, but I suspect the stability has decreased due to the joints or screws loosening. Does anyone know specific procedures or repair tips to make the Malm chest stable and secure again? I don’t want to just improvise, but am looking for recommended assembly methods or materials that have proven effective. Thanks in advance for any help!

Hey everyone!!! I also had a wobbly Malm chest of drawers, and I was able to make it really stable without expensive special tools or hardware store deals!

My trick was: remove all the screws, then readjust the entire frame, and especially secure the back panel very firmly with long nails – you wouldn’t believe how much that helps! Then carefully applied wood glue to the dowels to increase stability. I was really worried my chest of drawers might fall apart, but now it’s standing like a rock!!! :-)

So, don’t give up, simple methods often do the job, and I’m happy to help!

In summary, based on an analysis of many user reports, the following conclusions can be drawn regarding the stabilization of the wobbly IKEA MALM chest of drawers:

- Main cause: play in the connecting elements and poor joint quality due to the use of wooden dowels and particleboard material.
- Effective solution: replace damaged dowels with precisely sized wooden rods, supplemented with high-quality wood glue.
- Important: the back panel should be securely fastened permanently, as it significantly contributes to the overall stability.
- Check metal connectors before reassembly, and avoid overtightening the screws.

Recommendation: proceed methodically, inspect and replace all critical connection points. This ensures long-lasting, reliable use without the need for further repairs.

Thanks to everyone for the helpful contributions! I now have a clear understanding of where the weak spots are and how to address them specifically. The advice on the correct use of wooden dowels, wood glue, and back panel fastenings was especially valuable.

I will probably start the dismantling tomorrow, check the dowels, and if necessary, replace them as recommended. I will also carefully adjust the metal connectors – better a bit too loose than too tight.

If any questions arise after the repair, I will gladly get back to you. Until then, thank you for the patient and thorough support here. 🙂
