Hello everyone, I have a problem with my Ikea Malm nightstands, which start to feel wobbly after some time. Since I’m looking for a durable and secure solution, I’m especially interested in how to effectively and permanently improve the stability of these nightstands—not just a quick repair, but a long-term reinforcement of the structure. What measures are particularly suitable to stabilize the cabinet edges, strengthen the joints between the components, and generally make the nightstand more resistant to wobbling or warping? Are there any proven methods or material recommendations that you use in practice? Thanks in advance!

Hi, the best approach is to replace the screws with longer and stronger ones, and additionally install cross braces inside. Wood glue applied to the joints usually also improves stability significantly.

Hello elisabet38, I can understand your question well. I suggest the following:

1. First, check all the connections to see if the screws and wall plugs (anchors) are still tight. Tighten any loose screws and, if possible, replace them with longer or stronger ones.

2. Use wood glue in addition at the joints to create a lasting hold. The glue hardens and stabilizes the connections.

3. If you feel confident, you can install flat metal brackets or wooden cleats inside the side panels to reinforce the cabinet.

4. Square or L-shaped wooden strips on the inner sides of the back panel can significantly increase torsional rigidity.

5. Also check the back panel – is it often only fastened with small nails? A thin plywood sheet used as reinforcement often provides more stability.

Common mistakes include only repairing the surface or not properly securing loose wall plugs.

In addition to securing with screws, inserting wood filler or small wooden dowels into worn-out holes often helps. Then re-screw. This significantly improves the hold.

The question is very well put, elisabet38, and shows that you are aiming for long-term stability. Malm nightstands often become unstable because the particle boards and joints give way. It is always advisable to use additional reinforcement materials. Metal angle brackets, in particular, are affordable, quick to install, and provide a noticeable improvement in stability. Note: Before attaching, clean the surfaces thoroughly and, if using metal, pre-drill holes to prevent the wood from splitting.

Furthermore, I recommend regularly tightening all visible screws and dowels and replacing them if necessary.

Thank you for the tips so far, especially the suggestion with the metal brackets sounds interesting. How exactly do you attach these brackets on the inside without losing stability or making them visible? And can installing trim strips inside along the side walls really improve load-bearing capacity that much, or is there a risk of weakening the material by using too many screws?
