Hello everyone,

Lately, I've noticed that the IKEA Malm nightstands often start to wobble, which honestly is quite annoying. I'm wondering what the typical causes for this are. Is it due to the design, the workmanship, or more related to the assembly?

I'm especially interested in whether the wobbling is a common characteristic of these pieces of furniture or if it mostly results from user errors or mistakes during setup.

Can someone explain the mechanics behind why the Malm series is so often affected and what can be done to prevent or reduce the wobbling?

Thanks in advance for any helpful responses!

Hello Punau39,

I completely understand your question. The wobbling of Malm nightstands usually has several causes, which I would like to briefly outline here:

1. Material and workmanship: Malm nightstands are mainly made of particleboard with a thin veneer. Particleboard tends to deform slightly under load or moisture, which affects stability.

2. Design principle: The nightstands are not solidly built but rely on lightweight construction. This means that some joints and screw connections may have slight play.

3. Assembly: A common mistake is unevenly tightening the screws. If one screw is too loose or another is a bit too tight, it can easily cause wobbling.

4. Floor surface and adjustment: Uneven floors can prevent the nightstand from standing level and cause it to wobble.

Summary: The wobbling is mainly related to the materials used, the design, and the assembly. Tightening all screws and ensuring a level surface often helps. If you need more assembly tips, I’m happy to assist.

Simply check and tighten all screws. Often, the part is secure again after that.

Sometimes small plastic or felt pads attached to the bottom of the legs can help to compensate for uneven flooring and reduce wobbling.

To add to the well-described information:

The internal structure of the Malm nightstands is based on cam lock fittings and dowels, which can become loose over time or if not assembled correctly.

Exactly, the materials are not designed for maximum durability. The particleboard also reacts to humidity, which can cause swelling or shrinking and loosen joints as a result.

This series tries to strike a balance between cost and design, which naturally leads to compromises in stability.

My advice: regularly check the screws and, if there is persistent wobbling, use additional brackets or glue to secure any loose connections.

Also important: Malm nightstands should be placed on a level floor. Even slight inclines can cause them to wobble.
