Hello everyone,

I recently ordered the IKEA KALLAX shelving unit, and while assembling it, I noticed that some of the loose wood veneers on the individual shelves are peeling off or slightly lifting. The material feels quite thin overall, and I’m wondering what the best approach is to prevent further damage or make the unit more durable.

Has anyone experienced this issue? I’m especially interested in tips on how to securely reattach the veneers without having to completely disassemble the entire shelving unit or undertake major work. Are there suitable adhesives, sealants, or mechanical methods that provide a lasting solution?

There are many discussions online, but opinions vary a lot. Some suggest sanding down the wood completely and re-venering, while others recommend simple adhesive tapes.

I appreciate any advice on how to best deal with loose wood veneers on IKEA KALLAX shelves.

This method has reliably helped me with several KALLAX parts and feels much more stable than simply using tape or nails.

I think this whole issue with loose veneers clearly shows how cheap mass-produced products come with low-quality materials.

Honestly: who expects veneer quality comparable to professional furniture from a 40-euro (about 45 USD) shelf? It’s better to plan from the start with appropriate plastic edging or high-density panels instead of constantly patching things up.

Seeing everyone fiddling around with glue and weights only confirms to me that these KALLAX units are basically disposable furniture you can either spend a lot to repair or just throw away after a few years.

So here’s my provocative statement: if you want lasting quality, it’s better to invest more upfront than to modify IKEA cabinet fronts.

That may very well be true, and I admit I chose the KALLAX mainly because of its low price. However, I also bought the shelf for flexibility and design reasons—those are important factors for me.

I just wanted to find out if the veneer issue can be managed reasonably well with a proper repair approach, so I don’t have to constantly deal with the shelf.

The detailed tips on glue and weights are really helpful to me! Also, the warning against adhesives like hot glue. That’s how I will proceed now.

If problems arise again after some time, I might look into alternatives. But for now, I’m glad to have specific, understandable repair advice that doesn’t completely devalue the financial investment in the KALLAX.
