ᐅ If Building Again – What Would You Do Differently?

Hello everyone!

I’ve often heard the saying, “Your first house is built for an enemy” — I wouldn’t put it quite that harshly, but after a year in a new build, I understand what they meant. 😀 Since we might move again, I’d like to collect some ideas here and benefit from your experiences: What would you do differently if you were to build again?

Here’s what I’ve noted so far:
  • electric roller shutters
  • thermostats with displays
  • larger storage room
  • less awkwardly shaped rooms
  • dedicated cloakroom area
  • wooden window sills (?)
  • more outdoor power outlets
  • power outlets in window frames

What about you?

# Took a closer look at what’s currently possible, for example roof windows that open automatically or built-in ceiling speakers
# Went through the planning process more thoroughly
# Don’t follow trends blindly, for example consider if floor-to-ceiling windows are really necessary here or there
# Quieter exhaust ventilation
# More soundproof doors. They only add a small extra cost but make a difference
# Possibly more walls made of calcium silicate blocks
# Possibly a lower knee wall and roof windows, but instead add a large dormer (especially if budget matters)
# I would probably also treat myself to the fingerprint door now 🙂

I don’t have any room thermostats anywhere, and it works perfectly without them ;-) I would always recommend this approach to everyone.

I would want 2.5m (8 feet) high windows everywhere. I just think it looks amazing.
I can also highly recommend external venetian blinds (raffstores) to everyone.

I would do many things the same way again, but I would prefer a flat roof instead of the pitched roof (which had to be built).

We made that mistake too. We also have a noise barrier in that direction.
What we expected (and don’t mind) are the football training sessions that take place.
What annoys us more, and what we underestimated, are the drinking parties at the village sports field with DJ Ötzi playing until 2:30 a.m. 😀

That was naive, though. We’re such indoor people that we didn’t think about stuff like that. We should have built a computer scientist’s house—just a basement, nothing else. From above, the property basically looks undeveloped. :P

Yeah, if you’re a nerd, your home should meet a nerd’s needs. Most people are a bit more flexible and don’t mind having others around 😉 … maybe even join in somewhere or something 😎

What? You don’t live in a cleanroom? ;-) Then you really need to move. ;-)

Yuck! People! :P

Just kidding, it’s not that bad, but we really aren’t party animals. Big parties with lots of alcohol are something we only do about twice a year. In general, alcohol consumption is so deeply rooted, established, and accepted in society right now—probably regardless of the region—that our attitude toward drinking to excess already excludes us from a lot of social situations.
That doesn’t bother me much though. I just want peace and to meet up in a relaxed way with a few carefully chosen people I enjoy spending time with, and vice versa. Quality over quantity. My husband also enjoys a whisky now and then, but definitely not to the point of blackout. Neither of us can handle a lot, and since we earn our living using our brains, neither of us is interested in regularly knocking out a few more brain cells.

Otherwise, I obviously agree. Our current house is already quite nerd-friendly apart from the location. But there’s definitely room for improvement. 😀
Maybe our next build will really have a basement, so I can finally have a proper game room again. Right now I only have a room upstairs, but I have to keep the shutter closed all the time so nothing gets damaged (sun fading on OVPs).
