ᐅ Number of roof windows and their placement.

Hello everyone,

we are currently planning roof windows. Below you will find the attic floor plan, where the windows have been placed provisionally:

As you can see, there are also windows on the gable side. The roof space will be used as a studio and has no other interior walls.

Are 6 roof windows too many? Maybe you have some experience with this.

If you mean the dormer that only appears on the eaves side view: I think you are planning something that hasn’t fully formed in your spatial imagination yet. Please show a floor plan of the attic (and especially where the potential for expansion is supposed to be). Was the basement option dropped again?

half a year ago, the staircase direction was wisely reversed, so the problematic makeshift dormer is no longer an issue. I’m curious how long this groundhog will keep popping up ;-)

Is the height less than 2 m (6.5 ft) where the stairs end? If so, there should urgently be a roof window directly opposite the stairs on the right side, with the width of the staircase.

The question is, what is this room going to be used for? Where is north?

Hello @kbt09, it is 2.30 meters (7.5 feet) where the stairs end. A window is definitely needed there. The question is whether the windows at the top and bottom of the plan are really necessary since there are already windows on the gable side.

I would try to make the gable windows larger.

That too, yes. But above all, I would first focus on the stakeholders of possible uses and then, for example, enclose a play corridor at the stair landing. Building the entire volume merely as a heat loss issue probably wouldn’t be the best approach. The rest of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) aspects would also need to be addressed: participation or non-participation in the controlled residential ventilation system, and so on.
