Hello everyone, I recently purchased the Hemnes wardrobe from Ikea and want to make sure I care for it in a way that maximizes its durability. My specific question is: How should I best maintain and treat my Ikea HEMNES furniture to protect the natural wood surface from everyday wear, moisture, and discoloration? Are there any special cleaning products, regular care routines, or particular practices I should follow to ensure the wood retains its appearance and strength for many years? I look forward to your experiences and tips!

For the HEMNES, you should mainly use soft, damp cloths and avoid harsh cleaning agents. Regular dusting is usually sufficient. Be sure to avoid excessive moisture, as it can cause the wood to swell.

Hello LITOTO, to extend the durability of your Ikea HEMNES furniture, I recommend the following:

- Cleaning: Use mild soapy water or special wood cleaners, never harsh chemicals.
- Wiping: Always wipe down with a dry, soft cloth after cleaning to prevent moisture from entering the pores.
- Maintenance: It can be helpful to treat the wood with wood oil or wax (suitable for painted or natural surfaces) every 6 to 12 months. This protects the surface and keeps it flexible.
- Environment: Make sure the furniture is not exposed to direct sunlight or extremely dry air, as this can dry out and make the wood brittle.

Avoid common mistakes such as placing hot or wet objects directly on the surface to prevent rings and stains. By following these tips, your HEMNES piece should provide lasting enjoyment.

It doesn’t hurt to treat the wood with wood oil or wax (suitable for lacquered or untreated surfaces) every 6 to 12 months.

This is actually a very important tip. I would like to add that HEMNES is usually made of lacquered pine wood. This means that regular treatment with oil is not recommended, as it can damage the lacquer layer. Instead, you should use a special furniture polish designed for lacquered furniture.

It is also important to regularly check the stability by tightening any loose screws during assembly, because otherwise the wood can quickly suffer.

Additionally, I recommend protecting delicate surfaces with felt pads – this keeps the surface intact over the long term without scratches or pressure marks.
