LanelenGood morning everyone,
I am currently looking for suitable furniture for our new children’s room and am strongly considering the Hemnes series from Ikea. My main concern is the safety of this furniture, especially in everyday family life with small children.
I am particularly interested in the following aspects:
- Are the Hemnes pieces stable enough to prevent tipping when children climb on or lean against them?
- How safe is the material and workmanship? Are there any known issues with harmful substances in the surface finish or the wood?
- I have heard that some Ikea furniture can tip over if not properly secured – how critical is this with Hemnes specifically?
- Are there any experiences regarding whether the drawers and doors are child-friendly, meaning they do not pose a risk of injuries such as pinching?
I would really like to hear how other parents view this, what experiences they have had, and whether Hemnes is truly suitable in terms of safety for children, or if I should consider other types of furniture.
Thank you in advance for your opinions and tips!

Oh, really interesting question! 😊 I have two little ones at home and have been using Hemnes furniture for years – honestly, it’s very sturdy!
Regarding stability: As long as you position and secure the furniture against the wall according to the instructions, you won’t have any problems. My kids climb on things a lot, and I’ve never had to worry about anything tipping over.
As for the materials: Hemnes is mostly made from solid pine or wood, with low-emission, tested finishes – overall very good quality, so you can feel pretty confident.
Doors and drawers: I would recommend getting door stoppers and drawer locks from Ikea to reduce the risk of pinching fingers. Kids do like to explore and sometimes play with those.
So, if you keep all this in mind, Hemnes furniture is a really good choice for families with children! Just remember to securely fasten the furniture – safety first! Good luck with your furnishing, and feel free to ask if you have any more questions, I’m happy to help! 😃

Hello everyone! 😊
I have to fully agree with DUKUSU – the Hemnes series is quite well-made and, with some care, very child-safe.
That’s exactly the key! These pieces are solid, sturdy, but also classic Scandinavian design – meaning simple shapes that aren’t necessarily stable against tipping if they are not fixed in place.
Very important – and I can confirm this from personal experience: once the drawer locks are installed, even the most adventurous climbers are hardly at risk. And what I also like: Hemnes has no sharp edges, which significantly reduces the risk of injury.
So, if you install the furniture properly, the Hemnes range offers a nice combination of style, functionality, and safety for kids. One note from me: especially with older models, make sure there are no loose screws lying around and check regularly – safety always comes first. 😉
Any questions? I’m happy to share more tips!
