I am currently using various Ikea Metod wall cabinets for a small kitchen project and am wondering how much weight these cabinets can actually support. Specifically, I am interested in whether Ikea provides official specifications for the maximum load capacity of each wall cabinet in the Metod system, and how reliable these values are in everyday use. What factors affect the load-bearing capacity, for example, the type of wall mounting or the size of the cabinet? I plan to store heavy pots and cooking utensils in them and definitely want to avoid the cabinets sagging or, in the worst case, falling off the wall. Who has practical experience or knows the official specs? So: How much weight can an Ikea Metod wall cabinet realistically hold without compromising safety?

That’s exactly the question! You shouldn’t rely solely on the figures provided by Ikea. Ikea often gives only guideline values based on laboratory conditions. In real life, the load capacity strongly depends on the type of wall you are mounting to—whether it is concrete, drywall (plasterboard), or wood paneling. The installation itself is also crucial—screws, anchors, and the number of fixing points all play a major role.

The cabinet itself tends to hold more than the wall mounting can support. Have you checked for specific information, for example that a 60cm (24 inches) wide Metod wall cabinet can carry around 15–20 kg (33–44 lbs)? That’s what I would expect if the fixing is robust. However, I’d be cautious about placing very heavy pots directly inside.

Important: distribute the weight evenly and avoid overloading just one shelf. Do you have the option to provide additional support for the wall cabinets?

Wow, interesting topic! 💪 I have the Metod wall cabinets at my place and I’m really impressed with how sturdy they are. Of course, I haven’t put 50 kg (110 lbs) on them, but they easily hold my pots and spices! In my experience, you can safely plan for around 20 kg (44 lbs) per cabinet if they are properly mounted.

The most important thing is to use high-quality wall plugs and screws! I have my wall cabinets mounted on a concrete wall, and everything feels very secure.

Don’t be discouraged, these cabinets are more durable than you might think! Just install them carefully and then enjoy filling them. 😊

The Metod system can really handle a lot, but a wall cabinet is not exactly a skyscraper.

When I think about my kitchen, the cabinets are full of plates, glasses, and even some cookware – and they hold up perfectly fine.

Tip: It’s better to have several smaller cabinets, so the load is evenly distributed. And definitely keep the weight as close to the wall as possible.

But be careful, the fasteners are often the weak point, not the cabinet itself. Keep that in mind so the wall can handle the load!

Ikea specifies a maximum load capacity of about 15-20 kg (33-44 lbs) per Metod wall cabinet. The mounting must be suitable for this (e.g., anchors for concrete or masonry).

Heavier loads could cause issues.

I can add here that, besides the official load capacity, the installation is especially crucial. If you are mounting on drywall (plasterboard), you need special heavy-duty anchors or, better yet, additional fastening into the underlying structure.

Even for wall mounting, at least two, ideally three screws per cabinet are recommended.

The cabinets themselves are made of laminated MDF, which can handle a fair amount of pressure, but they do not respond well to point loads such as hanging weight on the front edge.

My advice: relieve the cabinets from each other and try to distribute the weight onto the side panels or the frame as much as possible.
