ᐅ How sturdy are IKEA Brimnes furniture pieces when used in homes with pets?

mandomarHello everyone,
I am considering purchasing furniture from the IKEA Brimnes series, specifically cabinets and dressers. Since I have pets, including a quite active cat and a medium-sized dog, I am concerned about the stability and durability of this furniture under such usage conditions.
My questions are: How well do Brimnes pieces hold up to everyday use with pets? Are there issues with scratches, moisture from spilled water, or mechanical stress when the animals sit or scratch on the furniture?
I would really appreciate any experiences shared that specifically address the impact of pets, as this would help me better assess my purchase plans. Thanks in advance!

to give you a well-informed assessment, here is a brief overview of the stability of the Brimnes furniture, especially under pet-related stress:
- Material: The furniture is mostly made from melamine-faced particleboard, which makes it resistant to light scratches and moisture, but it is not indestructible.
- Scratches from cat claws: The surface can become dull or show visible scratches over time, particularly if cats frequently jump on or scratch it.
- Weight stress: Dogs jumping on the furniture can cause the structure to become unstable over time, especially if this happens regularly.
- Handling moisture: Spilled water should be cleaned up quickly, as standing moisture can damage the particleboard.
My advice: If you plan to use the furniture intensively in a pet environment, I recommend protecting it with furniture pads or scratch protection films. Also, the furniture should be regularly checked and screws tightened, as they can loosen under stress.
If you like, I can provide more detailed information on care and specific protection measures.

I have a cat and a small dog myself, and I think IKEA furniture, especially from the Brimnes series, is generally sturdy but not designed for pets that scratch or climb extensively. Sometimes you almost feel guilty when the furniture starts to show signs of wear – as if it wasn’t meant for a home with animals.
It might help to protect the furniture with blankets or special covers. Still, I hope they hold up better for you than they do for me. You can only do your best and not take it too personally if your pet is active.
How long do you plan to use the furniture? That might also be a factor.

IKEA furniture isn’t designed for professional-level pet care, but it’s sturdy enough as long as you adapt and maintain it.
