I recently bought some BILLY shelves from IKEA and would like to better understand how these pieces of furniture hold up under strong sunlight—especially regarding color changes and material stability. I am particularly interested in whether the translucent white finish or the painted surface fades over time or becomes brittle due to UV exposure. Are there any specific experiences with how BILLY shelves age when placed permanently in direct sunlight? I would also like to know if there are recommended protective measures to preserve the color and material quality. Thanks in advance!

Yes, BILLY shelves tend to show slight fading when exposed to strong sunlight, but the material itself does not become brittle. Direct UV rays usually affect the color more than the structural integrity.

I would like to provide a detailed response to the question "How does BILLY react to strong sunlight in terms of color and material?" The BILLY shelf mainly consists of coated wood fiberboard (chipboard) with a melamine foil or lacquer finish.

1. Color: Direct UV exposure causes fading over time, especially on light or white surfaces. This is a physicochemical change in the color pigments.

2. Material: The melamine coating protects the surface against mechanical impacts and some moisture. UV radiation does not make the material brittle; however, edges and surfaces can experience slight fading or discoloration over several years.

3. Protection: It is recommended not to place BILLY permanently in very bright, unprotected sunlight areas or to apply UV-protective films to windows. Occasional dusting and moderate indoor humidity also help.

In summary: color changes due to sunlight are possible and common, while the material itself remains structurally sound. For long-lasting color freshness, protecting from direct sunlight is the best approach.

I can confirm that, but be careful – depending on the location, the BILLY bookshelf can really start to look a bit "vintage" after a few summers! 😉

I have my BILLY almost constantly exposed to sunlight in my living room and so far have had great results. The shelf is a bit lighter in some spots, but somehow that makes it look more unique.

Of course, if you expect a bright white, you might be disappointed, but I think that adds to its charm. One tip: curtains or blinds help if you want to keep the sun out completely. 🙂

Exactly. For anyone using the BILLY in rooms with strong sunlight, these measures provide the best protection.

Additionally, light colors on the BILLY are more sensitive to UV fading than darker surfaces. The latter show color changes less often and less noticeably.

From a material perspective, the shelves remain stable and do not require special care due to UV exposure.
