Hello everyone,

I have an IKEA Malm chest of drawers, and I want to replace the drawer slides. Some drawers don’t run smoothly anymore, often catching or feeling stiff.

Now I’m wondering: What’s the best way to replace the drawer slides in Malm drawers? Are there any special considerations, for example during disassembly, purchasing the correct replacement slides, or tips for reinstalling the drawer properly afterwards?

It’s important for me to know if there are specific screws or clips that need to be removed, or if the entire drawer should be taken out. And if anyone has a recommendation for the exact replacement part number set to get, that would be great!

I’m looking forward to your tips and instructions so I can fix the problem properly.

Hello piboan,

I’d like to provide you with a simple step-by-step guide for replacing the drawer slides on MALM drawers, which should hopefully help you.

1. Remove the drawer: Pull the drawer out straight. Usually, it is either just hooked in or secured with small clip mechanisms that can be easily released with a screwdriver.

2. Remove the old slide: The slide is screwed onto the back of the drawer. Loosen all screws holding the slide in place. Some models also have plastic clip holders where the slide is snapped in.

3. Obtain replacement parts: For MALM, there are standardized slide sets available, for example through the IKEA spare parts service. It’s worth noting the original number on the slide beforehand.

4. Install the new slide: Reattach the new slide using the screws. Make sure to align the slide exactly as the old one was—the sliding direction is important.

5. Reinsert and test the drawer: Slide the drawer back in and check for smooth operation.

Regarding screws or clips: Some MALM models use a combination of screws and clip mechanisms on the sides. If you have exact model details, I can provide more precise help.

If anything is unclear, feel free to ask!

Thanks for the quick reply!

Could you possibly also say whether the drawer needs to be completely removed for this, or can the slides be replaced while the drawer is still inserted? I’m asking because my MALM chest of drawers is quite deep, and it’s not easy for me to lift or tilt it.

Do you have a specific name or number for these parts, or advice on how to best find them? I’d prefer to order online in case visiting IKEA is difficult.

One last question: Is there anything important to keep in mind during installation to ensure the drawer slides smoothly again? Thanks in advance!

Hello piboan,

to answer your questions in detail:

Regarding the removal of the drawer: Yes, you should completely remove the drawer before replacing the drawer slides. Especially for MALM dressers, the slides are often attached at the sides or underneath at the back with small screws or clips. These can be difficult to reach if the drawer is still in place. Removing the drawer also helps prevent damage to the side panels of the dresser.

When purchasing the drawer slides: IKEA usually sells spare parts under the name "MALM drawer slide" or "slide rail for MALM drawer." If you can’t find the part number, you can contact IKEA customer service directly, and the staff should be able to identify and locate the correct parts based on your IKEA purchase receipt or model name.

Important for installation:
- Always tighten the screws firmly by hand, but do not overtighten, as this can cause the slide to warp.
- Check alignment: The slide must be perfectly straight; otherwise, the drawer will rub.
- Some models include small plastic guides that must be installed as well.

If you want, I can send you a more detailed checklist via private message to help with the step-by-step replacement.

Best regards!
