ᐅ How do you repair broken parts on Billy bookcases?

Hello everyone, a part of the middle shelf in my Billy bookcase from IKEA has unfortunately broken. It is the thin particleboard, which was probably damaged due to too much weight or rough handling. Now I want to repair it without having to replace the entire shelf. Does anyone have experience with properly fixing such broken parts? I am especially interested in how to stabilize the break points so that the load-bearing capacity is maintained. Materials, methods, and tools that work well would be very helpful.

Usually, wood glue and clamps are enough if the broken area is clean. Otherwise, reinforce it from underneath with thin strips, and the shelf will hold again.

If the crack is too large, a small wooden board placed underneath the panel often helps as reinforcement. This way, the load is distributed more evenly.

Thanks, the break edge is fairly straight, so that should work. Is it possible to use regular wood screws to add extra stability from underneath, for example in combination with glue? And how deep can the screws go into the plywood? I don’t want to weaken the material any further.

Wood screws are fine, but be careful! It’s best to pre-drill to prevent the particle board from splitting. Choose screws that are not too long to avoid damaging the other shelf board.

A small tip from me: Use wood glue that dries clear – it simply looks better and you won’t see glue marks. If you want it to match visually, you can also stain or paint the trim. 🙂 Screws inserted from underneath provide extra stability, but as mentioned before, make sure to pre-drill properly!
