Hello everyone, I’m currently facing the challenge of how to properly and safely secure IKEA Malm furniture in a rental apartment without damaging the walls or violating tenancy laws. Since the Malm series is often quite tall and prone to tipping, I want to make sure they don’t fall over, especially when children or pets are around. I know IKEA offers its own anti-tip devices, but how do these work in practice with different wall types like drywall (plasterboard), concrete, or wood? Are there recommended fastening methods or materials that are sturdy, reversible, and compliant with rental regulations? I look forward to your experiences and advice.

Hello ren63, regarding your questions:

Wall brackets are metal brackets that you attach to the upper inside of the furniture piece as well as to the wall. They provide additional stability by directly connecting the furniture to the wall and preventing tipping. Compared to the slim IKEA anti-tip straps, they are often more robust but also require more space and holes.

As for pressure-mounted fasteners that don’t require drilling: these usually only work on particularly sturdy surfaces and are often not designed for tall or heavy furniture. Additionally, they can leave marks or even cause damage. They are generally not recommended for drywall (plasterboard) as they put too much strain on the panel.

My advice: use cavity wall anchors combined with the original anti-tip straps or wall brackets. The investment is worthwhile for safety.

I understand that you are worried about potential damage in a rental apartment. I felt the same way. For me, it helped to talk with the landlord beforehand and get their approval. That made me feel more at ease, even though some holes were necessary.

I have added these wall brackets in my home and can confirm that they provide significantly more stability. There are also versions that are quite discreet and don’t take up much space.

If you want to be on the safe side, you could also mention safety concerns (children, pets) – this is usually well received and makes it easier to get permission for mounting.

Summary:

- For drywall, hollow wall anchors are the only practical option to securely attach Malm furniture.
- IKEA anti-tip kits are sufficient for lightweight furniture; for heavier or taller pieces, additional wall brackets are advisable.
- Pressure-mounted fasteners without drilling usually do not provide the necessary stability on drywall and are therefore not recommended.
- Always inform the landlord and obtain permission before starting any installation.
- After moving out, drill holes should be professionally filled to avoid any liabilities.

This approach aligns with many recommendations from building professionals and is both safe and compliant with tenancy regulations.
