Hello everyone,
I am planning to mount an Ikea Pax wardrobe on a wall made of red bricks. Since the Pax units are quite heavy, I want to make sure the installation is as secure and durable as possible. However, I am uncertain about which type of anchors and screws are best suited for fixing into a brick wall, and how to proceed without damaging either the wall or the wardrobe.
I am particularly interested in:
- Which types of anchors work best (e.g., heavy-duty anchors, cavity anchors, or similar)?
- How deep should the anchor holes be, and what screw length is appropriate?
- How should the mounting points be spaced to ensure the wardrobe hangs securely?
- Are there any special considerations when preparing the brick wall (e.g., experience with core drilling, special drilling techniques for bricks)?
I would be very grateful for specific tips or shared experiences so I can safely install the Pax wardrobe. Thanks in advance!

Hello gupetros,
From a technical perspective, the installation of an Ikea PAX wardrobe on a brick wall should be done using appropriate heavy-duty anchors. I recommend the following procedure:
- Use hammer anchors or metal expansion anchors specifically designed for solid bricks. Plastic anchors are usually too weak.
- Drill with a masonry bit matched to the size of the anchors, typically 8–10 mm (0.3–0.4 inches) in diameter.
- The drill depth should be at least 70 mm (2.75 inches) to ensure sufficient anchor holding power.
- Screws should be at least 6 mm (0.24 inches) in diameter and correspond to the length of the anchors to ensure a secure grip.
- Distribute the attachment points on the PAX wardrobe across the designated mounting brackets, with at least three per wardrobe module.
- Before positioning the wardrobe, insert all anchors correctly and pre-install the screws.
Important: Be careful not to drill too close to the edges of the bricks to avoid cracks. If possible, use a spirit level and level to ensure proper alignment. Following these steps should ensure a secure and safe installation of the PAX wardrobe on the brick wall.

I would like to add to the previous tips with a short guide:
1. Preparation:
- First, determine the exact type of wall: solid brick or hollow brick? For solid bricks, standard metal expansion anchors work, while hollow bricks require special cavity anchors or chemical anchors.
- Use a suitable masonry drill bit, for example, an SDS-Plus drill bit for a hammer drill.
2. Drilling:
- Mark the mounting points according to the PAX installation instructions (usually at the upper front corners).
- Drill cleanly and as straight as possible into the wall so the anchors hold properly.
3. Anchors and Screws:
- For solid bricks: heavy-duty metal anchors – preferably those that secure by expanding in the hole.
- Anchor length: at least as long as the anchor plus the screw – drill holes at least 70 to 80 mm (3 to 3¼ inches) deep.
- Screws: at least 6 mm (¼ inch) thick, matching the anchors.
4. Installation:
- Insert the anchors and screw in the cabinet brackets.
- Lift the cabinet and fix it to the wall; check with a spirit level.
One more tip: if you are unsure about drilling depth or choosing the wrong anchors, the load can damage the brick or cause the cabinet to fall. It’s better to work with some extra margin.
I hope this helps you!

Hey gupetros, I think it’s really important not to rely on simple plastic wall plugs! My recommendation is to use metal heavy-duty anchors—they hold very well in solid bricks.
What I’ve also learned is that especially with Ikea PAX wardrobes, where the load can be quite substantial, you should fix it to the wall at at least 3 to 4 points. Be particularly careful with bricks, as they can sometimes be a bit more porous.
And very important – drill deep enough and make sure the drill bit does NOT wobble! Otherwise, you’ll end up with messy holes.
Once everything is fully installed, you can be proud of your work! Good luck!

And very important – drill deep enough and DO NOT let the drill bit slip! That is absolutely correct. Often, holes are drilled inaccurately, resulting in poor anchor adhesion. Another point: before drilling, the wall should be checked for electrical cables or water pipes to avoid unpleasant surprises.
Additionally, I recommend using a mounting plate or cabinet back panel for especially heavy units to distribute the load more evenly. The PAX systems also offer suitable accessories for this purpose.
In summary: good preparation, appropriate anchors, correct drilling depth, and multiple fixing points are key to secure mounting on brick walls.
