Hello everyone, I am currently in a situation where I want to securely fasten my IKEA Malm furniture during a tenant change to prevent accidents and damage. I have heard that anchoring with special screws or brackets to the wall is advisable, but I am unsure which type of fastening is truly reliable and at the same time easy to remove without leaving significant marks when moving out.

Has anyone had experience with the best and safest way to secure Malm furniture when living in a rental? It is important to me that the method is not only stable but also can be removed with minimal residue, as I want to avoid any issues with the landlord when moving out.

Are there any specific tips, perhaps regarding tools or mounting materials, that are particularly suitable? I look forward to your suggestions and experiences.

For securely fastening Malm furniture, I always recommend using these special furniture anchors with anchors for drywall or concrete walls. Make sure the screws are long enough and suitable for your wall type.

It’s clear that you cannot remove screws without leaving holes behind. However, these types of anchors can usually be pulled out cleanly, and the holes are small and easy to fill. This way, there are no problems when moving out.

That is correct. For tall and unstable Malm furniture, it is recommended to use the official IKEA wall fasteners designed to prevent tipping hazards. These wall brackets are made to securely fix the furniture while allowing for easy removal with minimal damage.

Exactly, it is important to carefully fill and repaint the holes afterward, which usually prevents any issues with the landlord after moving out.

As an additional tip, I suggest securing the furniture at two points, ideally at the top and near the bottom, to maximize stability. Tools typically required include a cordless drill, level, and drill, depending on the wall type.

This may require some effort, but it is worth it for safety. For those who are not allowed to drill, slip-resistant furniture pads are an alternative—they offer less secure fixation but help prevent tipping.

I think this topic is really important because I was personally concerned about the risk of a Malm drawer chest tipping over, especially when children or pets are around.

I can only confirm this. I used these brackets and it really felt reassuring because I no longer had to worry about the chest tipping over. Of course, you’ll need to patch the holes properly when moving out, but I have also experienced that the landlord didn’t mind as long as the work was done neatly.

What I would additionally recommend: talk to the landlord before mounting anything to avoid misunderstandings. Sometimes there are specific rules for drilling, and that can save you stress later on.

Personally, I rented special tools and used a small IKEA guide – that made the whole process easier. So don’t hesitate. Safety comes first, especially if you don’t know the age of the next tenant or how the furniture will be used.

My conclusion: It’s worth investing some time to securely fix the furniture in place 🙂
