Hello everyone,
I am planning to install some Ikea Metod wall cabinets in my apartment. Since my wall is made of drywall, I am unsure how to securely and permanently mount the cabinets without damaging the wall or the cabinets.
My main question is: What methods, mounting materials, and procedures are best suited for installing Ikea Metod wall cabinets on a drywall wall to safely support the load?
I am especially interested in whether there are specific anchors or brackets recommended, if it is necessary to install a wooden batten or similar support behind the drywall, or if there are other proven approaches.
If anyone has practical experience with securely mounting these cabinets on drywall: I would appreciate detailed tips, information on the maximum allowable weight, and any common mistakes to avoid.
Thanks in advance!

As a general rule, I advise against attaching Ikea Metod wall cabinets directly to plain drywall without additional reinforcement. The cabinets are relatively heavy, especially when fully loaded, and standard drywall anchors often are not sufficient.
Recommendations:
- First, check the maximum load capacity of the drywall.
- Whenever possible, mount the cabinets onto the wooden or metal studs behind the drywall.
- If no studs can be located, be sure to install a wooden subframe (e.g., a batten or OSB panel) onto the wall and use that as the mounting base for the cabinets.
- Use high-quality metal expansion anchors or specialized hollow wall anchors that are rated for heavier loads.
Also important: Align the cabinets squarely and secure them with multiple anchors to distribute the load. It’s better to have several smaller loads rather than one heavily loaded anchor.
Safety should be the top priority in this matter.

Basically, I advise against mounting Ikea Metod wall cabinets directly onto plain drywall without additional reinforcement. From my perspective, this is the most important point and should not be underestimated. Drywall is inherently thin and has limited load-bearing capacity, especially under point loads.
I would add that it makes sense to locate the studs precisely using a metal detector or stud finder before installation and to screw the cabinets directly into them. While adding wooden battens or OSB boards can increase load capacity, this is not always visually appealing and involves extra work.
It’s also important to consider the weight of the Metod cabinet modules themselves – depending on the width of the unit, the weight can add up significantly, especially when fully loaded. Another relevant question is whether Ikea offers specific wall fixing solutions for drywall or if their standard mounting system is only intended for solid walls.
Have you ever worked with heavy-duty anchor systems in this context? Could they be a viable option?

Have you ever worked with heavy-duty anchor systems in this context? Could they be an option?I often find heavy-duty anchors problematic in drywall because they are usually designed for solid materials. In the cavity of a typical double-layer drywall, they hardly hold, even when using long anchors.
A very practical and building code-compliant solution, as already mentioned, is a sturdy wooden battens frame behind the drywall or at least an additional support panel on the surface, so the cabinets can be screwed into that. This installation provides a strong and secure load distribution.
Furthermore, the weight should not be underestimated: a single METOD cabinet (60x40 cm (24x16 inches)) weighs about 20 kg (44 lbs) even without contents. With multiple cabinets, the load adds up quickly. Fully loaded, you can easily reach 40–50 kg (88–110 lbs) per cabinet.
As an alternative, you can distribute the cabinet weight across several smaller wall anchors – so rather than attaching in only a few points, use multiple screws into the substructure.
If applicable, drywall-specific anchors such as metal toggle anchors (e.g., Molly bolts) can be an option if the wall has a single layer and a thickness of 12.5 mm (0.5 inches). Still, I would recommend those only for lighter loads.
Additionally, I would like to briefly summarize what is important to securely mount Ikea Metod wall cabinets on drywall:
- Check if there are studs (wood or metal) behind the drywall. If studs are present, always screw directly into them.
- If no suitable studs are available, install a sturdy backing board (wood battens, OSB, plywood) on the wall, either resting on the drywall surface or anchored with long screws.
- Use the metal brackets and screws supplied by Ikea for attaching the cabinet itself.
- For fastening the backing board to the wall, use appropriate heavy-duty anchors (e.g., toggle bolts, Fischer anchors, or similar). Drywall anchors alone are not recommended for full load-bearing capacity.
- If possible, use multiple attachment points during installation to distribute the load.
- After mounting, test the cabinet with incremental load (apply weight gently to check stability).
Safety takes priority over aesthetics or quick solutions. If in doubt, it is advisable to consult a professional company.
