Hello everyone,

I am currently facing the challenge of securely attaching Ikea Metod wall cabinets to my kitchen wall. My walls are made of concrete, but I want to be absolutely sure that the cabinets will hold up in the long term, as I plan to fill them with relatively heavy dishes and supplies.

My questions to the community:
- What type of anchors and screws do you recommend for concrete walls when installing these cabinets?
- Should I observe a specific minimum distance or special arrangement of the cabinet brackets to distribute the load optimally?
- Are there any tips to additionally secure the cabinets once hung, to prevent them from slipping or coming loose?

It would be great if anyone has experience with proper and safe installation methods that avoid damaging the wall or the cabinets.

Thank you very much in advance for your support!

For concrete walls, I recommend heavy-duty anchors with appropriate screws. The cabinet brackets should be installed according to the instructions and secured with at least two screws per bracket. Make sure to align the mounting brackets horizontally. Additional reinforcements are usually not necessary if everything is installed correctly.

When installing the Ikea Metod wall cabinets, it is important to choose the appropriate fasteners based on the type of wall. For concrete walls, metal anchors such as expansion anchors or heavy-duty anchors are suitable, as they provide secure load-bearing support. It is essential to fix the mounting brackets in a way that optimally supports the load distribution frame of the cabinets.

- A minimum of two fastening points per cabinet bracket
- Screws should be at least 6 mm (0.24 inches) in diameter
- The spacing of the brackets should follow the measurements given in the manual, typically around 60 cm (24 inches) apart

Additional measures to prevent slipping are usually not necessary, as the cabinet’s hanging system already provides a form-fitting hold.

Hello Ludole,

to ensure a permanently secure attachment of your Ikea Metod wall cabinets to concrete walls, I would like to give you a more comprehensive overview of the procedure, as many details are important here.

1. Preparation

- First, check the wall for unevenness or damaged areas, as these can affect the performance of the anchors.
- Use a spirit level and, if necessary, a straight edge to precisely align the mounting surface.

2. Selection of anchors

- For concrete, I recommend metal expansion anchors or heavy-duty anchors with a minimum anchor or drill hole diameter of 8 mm (5/16 inches), depending on the load.
- For heavier loads (>50 kg (110 lbs) per cabinet), chemical anchors (epoxy resin anchors) are advisable, as they provide higher load capacity.

3. Installation of brackets

- Fasten the brackets with appropriate screws (minimum 6 mm (1/4 inch) diameter, length adjusted to anchor length and wall thickness).
- Install the brackets so they can evenly distribute the weight — the minimum distance between them is determined by the cabinet width.

4. Hanging the cabinets

- Carefully hook the cabinets in and check that they sit securely without risk of tilting or detachment.
- The Ikea Metod mechanism normally has a locking function that prevents accidental release. If you feel any play, it is worth readjusting.

5. Follow-up check

- After one week, check again for stability and whether screws or anchors have loosened.

One more question: Are your walls completely raw concrete, or have they been plastered or finished in any way? Depending on the substrate type, the choice of anchors and mounting system might change.

In general: Careful preparation and careful selection of fixing materials protects against problems later on.

This is an important point. I understand how unsettling installation can be, especially when you worry about everything holding securely and not causing any damage.

In the past, I often acted too quickly and then got frustrated when anchors didn’t hold properly or when I had to make corrections. So it’s better to carefully assess the situation before installation, maybe even drill test holes and try out the anchors.

Also, it’s important to take your time during installation and avoid rushing – this can reduce stress and lead to a more reliable outcome.
