Hello everyone,

I recently bought an Ikea Pax wardrobe and want to install sturdy clothes rails that won’t bend or loosen over time. The standard clothes rails included with the Pax frames don’t seem strong enough for my rather heavy jackets and coats. My question is: How can I fit robust, long-lasting clothes rails in an Ikea Pax wardrobe without weakening the cabinet’s structure or leaving unsightly drill holes?

I would appreciate tips on suitable materials, assembly methods, and recommendations for clothes rails that work particularly well. It is especially important to me that the rails neither bend nor become loose, even under heavier loads.

Does anyone here have practical experience with this, especially with the Ikea Pax system, and knows any tricks to enhance stability? Thanks in advance!

Use metal clothes rails that you attach to the side panels with strong angle brackets. Pre-drill holes and use wall plugs; this will ensure they hold even under heavy load.

How can I securely install sturdy, long-lasting closet rods in an Ikea Pax wardrobe without weakening the cabinet’s structure or leaving unsightly drill holes?

This topic is more complex than it initially appears because the Pax wardrobe panels are made of relatively thin particleboard, which limits their load-bearing capacity. To properly secure a truly stable closet rod, you should consider the following points:

- Use a metal closet rod with a diameter of at least 22 to 25 mm (0.9 to 1 inch), as these bend much less and distribute weight more effectively.
- Avoid the original plastic brackets. Instead, opt for sturdy metal brackets (angle brackets or specialized closet rod holders) that can be attached with appropriate screws and especially high-quality wall anchors.
- Pre-drill the side panels to prevent material from splitting or tearing out.
- Pay attention to load distribution: the longer the closet rod, the more you should use an additional center support. This can be mounted directly under the rod on the back panel or on a cross brace.
- For a visually pleasing result, place drill holes either in the original hole locations or in moderate, planned positions—not randomly scattered.

In conclusion: If you’re unsure whether the wall panels have enough clamping strength, you can insert a sturdy wooden or metal crossbeam inside the cabinet to which the rod is mounted. This prevents stress on the thin particleboard.

How long is the closet rod you want to install, and how much weight do you estimate it will need to hold? This makes a big difference in how to proceed.

I fully agree with kibutar and would like to provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to install sturdy closet rods in an Ikea Pax wardrobe:

1. Planning:
- Measure the exact length of the interior wardrobe space and choose a closet rod made of sturdy metal, such as stainless steel or coated steel, with a larger diameter (approx. 25mm (1 inch)).
- If the rod is longer than 100cm (39 inches), be sure to plan for a center support.

2. Choosing the brackets:
- Buy robust angle brackets or special closet rod holders made of metal. These should have a flat resting surface for the rod to prevent slipping.

3. Preparation:
- Use high-quality wall anchors designed for chipboard (between 16 and 18mm (0.6 and 0.7 inches) thick in Pax).
- Pre-drill the holes all around to avoid splitting the material.

4. Installation:
- First, attach the brackets to the side walls.
- Position the rod and, if necessary, add a center support on the back panel or a vertical post between the bottom and top of the wardrobe.

Common mistakes:
- Using rods that are too thin and bend under load.
- Brackets sagging over time if only plastic components are used.
- Using drill holes without anchors — this leads to material splitting.

One more tip: If you want the installation to be completely invisible, you can use brackets recessed into the interior of the wardrobe, making them barely visible.

If you like, I can also recommend some suitable products that have worked well in my Pax installation.

If you’re unsure whether the tension of the walls is sufficient, a sturdy wooden or metal crossbeam can be installed inside the closet to which the rod is attached.

This is very good advice. I would add that it is essential to ensure even tension throughout. A crossbeam made of plywood or a suitable aluminum profile can distribute the load much more effectively. Make sure to consider the exact width of the closet so that no stress is applied to the side walls.

From my own experience: two years ago I installed a custom cross brace that I fixed to the side walls using small brackets. The garment rod supports were then mounted on the beam. Since then, both winter clothes and heavy leather jackets have hung without any sagging.

Also: always pre-drill the screw holes and tighten screws with the appropriate torque; otherwise, the thin material can easily tear out.
