Hello everyone, I have an IKEA Malm chest of drawers where the connecting rods—the crossbars that stabilize the side panels—need to be replaced. The rods are damaged or bent, which affects the stability of the chest. My question is: What is the best way to replace the connecting rods in a Malm chest of drawers? Is it necessary to fully remove the drawers, and are there specific tools or tips I should be aware of to replace the rods without causing damage? Has anyone had experience with this replacement or advice on what to watch out for? Thanks in advance!

What is the best way to replace the connecting rods on a Malm dresser?I can definitely understand that this can be a tricky task. From my experience with Malm dressers, it is often necessary to remove the drawers completely to access the connecting rods properly. This is especially true because the rods can sometimes be positioned deep inside and secured firmly.

Are there specific tools or tips I should keep in mind?A small Phillips screwdriver is almost always essential, and sometimes a small hammer or rubber mallet helps to loosen the rods if they are stuck. In my opinion, the most important thing is to work carefully to avoid damaging the side panels – this can happen easily.
If you like, I can describe how I handled it back then. For me, having patience and placing the dresser on a soft surface to prevent scratches was especially helpful. How about you, have you already started removing any of the drawers?

1. First: Remove all the drawers completely from the chest of drawers. This makes access much easier.
2. Lay the Malm chest of drawers on its side—ideally carefully onto a blanket or mat. This way you can better reach the connector rods and pull them out straight or, if necessary, loosen them gently by levering.
3. The connector rods are usually fixed to the side panels with small screws or clip connections. Depending on the manufacturing year, this may vary, so inspect the connections carefully beforehand.
4. Unscrew the screws using the appropriate screwdriver. If the rods are stuck, use light taps with a rubber mallet to protect the material.
5. When inserting the new rods, pay close attention to the exact position so that the chest of drawers stands straight and remains stable.
6. After inserting, tighten the screws again, but not too strongly—otherwise the wooden panels might split.
One more thing: Do you possibly have original replacement parts from IKEA? Otherwise, the fit may not be guaranteed, which can lead to problems.
If you want, I can also provide tips for assembling the drawers in case you are unsure about that.
