Hello everyone, I have a Malm chest of drawers from IKEA, and one of the drawer runners is damaged. I want to replace the runners but am unsure about the best way to proceed. Specifically, I’m looking for advice on how to remove the damaged runners safely without damaging the drawer or the frame. It would also be helpful to know if any special tools are needed to install new runners and whether replacement parts are easy to obtain. Are there different types of runners depending on the production year of the Malm chests that I should be aware of? I’m hoping for some tips, as I’d like to get the chest fully functional again. Thanks in advance!

I want to be able to remove these rollers reliably without damaging the drawer or the frameI completely understand how frustrating that can be—I’ve been through it myself. The important thing is to fully remove the drawer first, then take a close look at the pair of rollers. In my case, the rollers were usually just fitted in and needed to be pulled out with some force. A small flathead screwdriver can help to gently pry them loose if they’re stuck, but be careful not to use too much force.

whether special tools are needed to install new rollers and if replacement parts are easy to getI ordered my replacement rollers directly from IKEA—it was straightforward. You don’t really need any special tools, maybe just a flathead screwdriver. If you’re not very confident with DIY, I’d also recommend testing the rollers on the existing drawer before actually replacing them to make sure they fit properly.
I hope this helps a bit, and that you manage the replacement without any damage. If you like, feel free to share how it went—I’m curious!
Additional information: The Malm drawers actually have different types of rollers depending on the manufacturing period.
The rollers inside the drawer are mounted on a small metal axle or a plastic pin. To remove them, the drawer is usually fully pulled out, and then the roller can be carefully pulled off or pressed out.
It is advisable to check whether the rollers are secured with clips or simply snapped in. When dealing with clips that have small tabs, handle them gently to avoid breakage.
When installing replacement rollers, make sure the dimensions are identical. Malm rollers from IKEA are generally available as spare parts under the item number on the IKEA website.
Tools: A small screwdriver or a thin lever is sufficient; nothing more is required. Avoid using excessive force to prevent damaging the drawer front.
One more tip: Before final installation, test the new rollers by placing them briefly on the track and gently pulling the drawer out to check functionality.

You don’t need any special tools. Order replacement parts directly from IKEA; they usually have the right types.
Pull out the drawer, replace the rollers, put it back in – that’s all.
