Hello everyone, I have an Ikea Malm chest of drawers where the drawer slide rail has worn out, causing the drawer to no longer run smoothly or often get stuck when opening. My question is: How can I professionally replace the drawer slide rail on Malm chests of drawers?

I would like to get a step-by-step guide, including information on whether special tools are needed, if an original replacement rail from Ikea is required or if compatible third-party options are available, and what to pay special attention to in order to ensure the drawer runs smoothly and reliably afterward.

If there are any tips on common mistakes during installation, that would also be very helpful. Thanks in advance for your support!

In addition to the steps already mentioned: order replacement parts from Ikea that fit your Malm chest of drawers. Tighten screws several times, as they can often loosen during assembly. Do not use force if the rail does not fit.

Hello Catalinm62, I have replaced drawer slide rails on Malm furniture several times and can share the following:

First and foremost: it’s best to mark the original position of the slides with a pen or tape before removing them. This way, you can install the new rails in exactly the same spot.

Before starting, it’s advisable to check both the slides and the guide rails inside the cabinet for any damage or dirt.

When mounting, it’s normal to initially tighten the screws loosely to align the rails. Once aligned, tighten the screws fully.

If the new rails don’t exactly match the existing screw holes, minor adjustments might be necessary, such as drilling new holes – but this is usually not needed with original replacement parts.

I highly recommend working calmly and step by step – then it should go smoothly! 🙂

If the rail is even slightly misaligned, you notice it immediately.

That is correct. Another tip: After installation, it helps to open the drawer halfway first and test it before closing it completely, in order to identify any tight spots along the track and make small adjustments if necessary.
