Hello everyone, I recently purchased an IKEA Malm drawer chest and noticed that the drawers don’t adjust quite properly. Specifically, some drawers are difficult to open and close, while others are slightly misaligned in the tracks, making closing them harder. I want to adjust the drawers so they operate smoothly, evenly, and without issues. Does anyone have experience with the mechanical adjustment of these Malm drawers? Is there a specific technique or trick to correctly calibrate the drawer slides or the drawers themselves? I would appreciate a detailed guide or tips, ideally with advice on aligning the drawers and ensuring smooth operation.

For precise adjustment of Malm drawers, it should be noted that the rails with telescopic slides are usually mounted on the sides of the drawer box. The internal mechanism typically allows fine-tuning through small adjustment screws or sliding elements that slightly change the horizontal alignment and height. If the drawer sticks or jams, first check the screws on the guides. Cleaning the rails from dust and manufacturing residues is strongly recommended. For inspection, it is advisable to completely remove the drawer, check the rails, and then reinstall them step by step, verifying the fit at each stage.

Pull out the drawers, loosen the screws on the drawer slides, align the drawer, and then tighten the screws again. This usually works well with Malm drawers, and afterward everything operates more smoothly.

Exactly, that is the most important point. In some models, the plastic parts function almost like clips that can be gently unlocked with a flat-head screwdriver to slightly adjust the drawer’s position. A delicate touch is needed to avoid causing any damage.

That’s why you should first loosen the screws slightly, adjust, test, and then tighten them. This way, nothing goes wrong.

Thanks for the tips so far. I have a follow-up question: My drawers have side-mounted slides, but I haven't found any visible adjustment screws, only fixed screws. Could the plastic components you mentioned be hidden as well? Do I need to pull the drawer completely out of the cabinet, or even disassemble it? And what is the proper way to proceed to avoid causing any damage?

This can vary with Malm drawers depending on the production year or model. Often, the adjustment components are small plastic clips on the sides, which are only visible when you remove the drawer and look from underneath or inside. You need to fully pull out the drawer, then, with some force and care, move the clips or guides. Sometimes it also helps to slightly lift the drawer front panel to access the mechanism better. Screws should only be loosened when the drawer is out. If you’re unsure, the assembly instructions from IKEA can be helpful; sometimes a PDF version is available online.
