Hello everyone, I have a rather specific problem: my Malm dresser squeaks repeatedly when opening and closing the drawers, which is really annoying. I suspect it might be due to the drawer slides or mounting points, but I'm not entirely sure. Has anyone had experience with how to permanently eliminate this squeaking? It is important to me that the furniture is not damaged and that the solution is as simple as possible. Thanks in advance!

Hey Elbar! 🙂 I had the squeaking once too – I tried wax, and it worked quite well. A candle piece or furniture wax is great for reducing friction and getting rid of the squeak. 🙂 The key is to polish thoroughly afterward to make sure nothing sticky remains and no dust sticks. Maybe try this first before reaching for spray or grease. Good luck!

That often works for me too! Especially if it’s just a light squeak, furniture wax is usually enough. Great that you mentioned it 🙂 Only for really stiff tracks would I recommend using silicone spray, as it’s a bit stronger. So just try both and see which works better.

Exactly! And guys, remember: Don’t just spray, but after a while, move the drawer back and forth a few times so the lubricant spreads evenly. That really makes a difference! Yay, a silent Malm piece of furniture is possible! :-)

One last tip to finish: some models of the MALM series also have plastic glide pieces in the tracks that can move. These should not be missing and must be positioned correctly, as otherwise they can cause squeaking. After thorough cleaning and lubrication, it may be useful to have all mechanical parts checked for wear by the IKEA service center – spare parts can often be ordered easily and replaced free of charge.

Check the screws, clean the surfaces, lightly score rough areas, and apply lubricant. Replace the plastic gliders if needed. This is how MALM works best.

Thanks to everyone for the many helpful tips! I will start by tightening all the screws and thoroughly cleaning the rails. I’ll also give silicone spray a try, and of course won’t forget to move the drawer back and forth while applying it. The idea of using furniture wax also sounds interesting if the spray isn’t enough. If it doesn’t improve as expected, I’ll also look into plastic glides or new replacement parts. Thank you all for your support and the discussion here – I’ll follow up with an update! 🙂
