Hello everyone,

I have a problem that many parents might be familiar with: my children have left some drawings and scribbles on the white Ikea Hemnes furniture in our living room. Unfortunately, these marks are hardly removable with regular methods like water and soap without damaging the surface.

Since I care a lot about maintaining the furniture and want to preserve it as close to original as possible, I am looking for effective methods or home remedies that can remove the children’s drawings without harming the white paint or the wood.

Does anyone have experience with similar situations? Are there any recommended cleaning products or specific cleaning techniques for the Ikea Hemnes series that work best? I would appreciate any tips and advice on how to solve this problem as gently as possible.

Hello Elijon,

I understand your situation well and would like to offer you a clear guide on how to remove children's drawings without damaging the furniture:

- First, I recommend trying to gently wipe the drawings off with a soft, damp cloth and some mild dish soap.
- It may sound simple, but often being gentle and patient is enough to avoid harming the finish.
- If that’s not sufficient, you can try using an eraser, which sometimes works wonders on colored pencil.
- For more stubborn marks on Hemnes furniture (which is usually painted white), I suggest using isopropyl alcohol or rubbing alcohol: apply it to a cotton pad and test first on an inconspicuous area.
- Be careful not to rub too hard to avoid stripping the paint.
- Alternatively, a special furniture finish cleaner available at hardware stores can be used. Again, it’s best to test carefully first.

Finally, just wipe down with clear water and dry.

I hope this helps! If you want to know exactly which product works best for specific colors, feel free to ask.

If it is colored pencils or wax crayons, an eraser often helps.

For felt-tip pens, isopropyl alcohol or nail polish remover (without acetone) can be effective, but always test first on an inconspicuous area.

I find it interesting that we all assume the paintings have to be removed. But why? I would argue that children’s drawings on furniture are a form of art that can add character to a home.

Of course, you want to keep things clean, but sometimes it’s worth thinking outside the box and accepting the traces of childhood as memories. Maybe that wouldn’t be such a bad option?

Just a thought.

I understand the desire for a clean surface, especially with the Hemnes furniture, which is classic white and simple in design. Here are a few tips from my experience that effectively and gently remove children’s drawings:

- If possible, start with the mildest cleaning agents like water and dish soap.
- For tougher stains, isopropyl alcohol or a glass cleaner containing alcohol can help.
- Never apply the cleaning product directly to the surface; always use a cloth to avoid saturating the furniture.
- Avoid harsh solvents like acetone, as they can damage the finish.
- If the stains still don’t come off, white erasers or special silicone-based products can protect the surface while cleaning.

It’s important to be cautious and use mild methods repeatedly rather than one aggressive treatment.

If you like, I can provide more detailed advice on the proper use of some household remedies.

A simple tip: As soon as the drawing is fresh, wipe it off immediately with a damp cloth.

For older stains, you can carefully try using rubbing alcohol. Always test on a small area first.
