Hello everyone, I recently bought Malm furniture from IKEA, specifically dressers and nightstands, and I noticed that the surfaces and edges are quite prone to scratches and minor damages. My question is: What are some proven methods to effectively prevent damage to Malm furniture? I am interested in tips for everyday protection, during assembly and setup, as well as for cleaning and maintenance. Any advice on the best way to handle the materials would also be very helpful, as I am unsure whether special care products or protective films are useful. Thanks for your experiences and suggestions!

Regarding weight limits for Malm furniture: IKEA specifies load capacities for each piece of furniture. For Malm dressers, these are typically around 25-30 kg (55-66 lbs) per drawer and 60-70 kg (132-154 lbs) for the entire dresser as a static load.

It is important to adhere to these limits, as exceeding them can warp the panels or damage the surface finish.

As for protective films: universal furniture protection films are usually suitable, but it is important to choose those with good adhesive properties and scratch resistance. I do not have tested products specifically for Malm; therefore, it is advisable to test the films before applying them.

What are your thoughts on the weight limits for Malm – for example, when placing heavy items? Are there specific values that should not be exceeded?

I can confirm that, RENMA sums it up well. You should absolutely not exceed the maximum load capacity. Additionally, it is advisable to distribute the weight as evenly as possible across the surface to avoid concentrated pressure points.

Has anyone had experience with films specifically advertised for IKEA Malm furniture? Or are universal furniture protection films also suitable?

In general, universal films work well if they are transparent, leave no residue, and are scratch-resistant. Before applying them across the entire surface, I would test in an inconspicuous area how easily the film can be removed.

Malm furniture is sensitive to moisture. Therefore, do not use wet sponges or cloths. Always wipe dry immediately.

To avoid scratches, it is best to place protective mats or placemats under decorations.

Summary: Cleanliness and targeted protection.

I’d like to add that the time of year also plays a role. Especially in winter, the air can be drier, and if furniture is placed near heating sources, the material can become more brittle and therefore more prone to small cracks or chipping.

So, if possible, avoid placing Malm furniture too close to heat sources and ventilate regularly; this helps to relieve stress on the material. Sometimes humidifiers can also be helpful if the air is very dry.

Just as a side note: I still believe that felt pads and good protective films remain the best friends of Malm dressers. 😉

I agree, but I would like to add that when choosing felt pads, it is important to consider their adhesive strength. Weak products tend to come off quickly, causing more harm than good, as the lack of protection can lead to scratches at inconvenient times.

It is also advisable to check the felt pads at least every six months since dust and small stones can get stuck in them, creating a sanding effect.

In summary: Regular inspection and cleaning of protective measures help maintain the condition of the furniture over time.
