Hello everyone,

I have a small issue with my IKEA PLATSA in the hallway. My apartment is quite small, and the hallway has limited space, so I want to make the furniture as functional and space-saving as possible. I mainly need storage options for shoes, jackets, hats, and a few everyday items like keys and bags.

The challenge is that the hallway is just under 2 meters (6.5 feet) wide and doesn’t offer long areas for placing furniture. PLATSA seems like the best solution for me, but I’m wondering how to best customize the system to maximize storage without overcrowding the space or blocking the walkway.

Additionally, I’m interested in any tips on smart interior organization (drawers, shelves, hooks, etc.) and whether it’s worthwhile to include extra features like lighting or special organizers.

Does anyone have experience optimizing IKEA PLATSA in small hallways? I’d appreciate any ideas to make my hallway both practical and visually appealing.

I would recommend first measuring exactly how much space is actually available. Then choose as many smaller modules as possible instead of one large cabinet.

Hooks for jackets on the inside of the doors, and drawers for smaller items like keys or bags.

Also: shoes are best stored in boxes or on pull-out shelves to prevent clutter.

Hello Buokan,

welcome to the forum! I think your question is very well structured and easy to understand because you clearly define both the spatial limitations and your usage needs. Now, here is my recommendation for optimizing your IKEA PLATSA in a small hallway:

1. Planning
- Measure the space precisely, including all corners and any special features (door openings, radiators, light switches).
- Use IKEA’s online PLATSA planner to test different layouts. This way, you can combine modules without buying them right away.

2. Make use of ceiling height
- In the hallway, tall units with stepped shelves work well. You can store seasonal items at the top and everyday items at the bottom.

3. Interior fittings
- Drawers with organizers for keys and bags
- Hook rails or folding hooks for jackets and hats
- Pull-out shoe compartments at the lower level

4. Additional elements
- LED strips inside or outside are not only practical but also create atmosphere and improve visibility.
- A mirror on the outside of a door can visually enlarge the space and be useful.

5. Color scheme
- Since the hallway is small, I recommend light colors and minimal decoration to avoid overcrowding the space.

6. Common mistakes
- Avoid large cabinet doors that block the hallway
- Avoid cabinets that are too deep, restricting the passage significantly

If you want, I can also create a simple example configuration. The important thing is to keep the interior flexible so you can rearrange it as needed.

I hope this helps you!

Absolutely, lighting really makes a difference! Your hallway will not only appear brighter but also feel bigger and more welcoming.

I once fitted my PLATSA with small LED strips and was amazed at how much they enhanced the entire unit. Plus, it’s practical when you just need to quickly find something in the evening without turning on the main ceiling light.

Another tip: use baskets and boxes on the shelves. This keeps everything tidy and also looks stylish. And if you want to quickly hide something, they are your best friend.

What I also really like is hanging a few magnetic strips for keys or notes on the “inside” of doors. It saves space and adds organization. 😉

Good luck with your optimization – I’m sure your PLATSA will be the highlight of the hallway!
