Hello everyone, I am looking for practical ideas and tips on how to enhance and make my IKEA Hemnes furniture in the living room more functional. I am especially interested in how to update the classic Hemnes pieces in terms of storage and design to fit current interior trends, without losing the characteristic style of the series. Has anyone had experience upgrading these furniture items with practical extensions, custom modifications, or clever DIY solutions? Also, how do you approach color schemes or material combinations to keep the overall look both cozy and modern? I look forward to concrete suggestions, preferably with real-life examples.

The Hemnes series is generally well suited for integration into various design styles, as the furniture features a classic Scandinavian design. For additional storage, I recommend choosing extra shelves or storage boxes that match, in order to expand the existing functionality. In terms of color, it is effective either to keep the natural finish and add warmth with textiles or to paint individual pieces white or in other light tones to refresh the overall look. The key to optimization lies in combining practical additions with visual clarity. Important: When modifying the furniture, it is essential to use high-quality materials and appropriate paints to ensure durability.

The Hemnes style offers a great foundation because it is sturdy and visually versatile. If you are looking for practical modifications, I recommend using drawer inserts or organizers to optimize storage space. When it comes to color design, it’s wonderful to play with complementary shades in the room—a matte white on the walls combined with warm, wooden brown tones of the furniture creates a cozy, inviting atmosphere. It’s also worth replacing the handles; this is a simple change with a big impact. For those feeling more adventurous, you can treat individual furniture surfaces with chalk paint or experiment with self-adhesive film in a concrete look to achieve a slightly more modern appearance. It is important to carefully consider your preferences and, if possible, test beforehand to avoid surprises.

For storage: Improve the interior space with boxes or dividers. In terms of color: paint Hemnes white or keep natural wood tones, depending on the room size. Change handles for a fresh look. A consistent approach to decoration helps avoid a cluttered design.

I’m not a big fan of DIY trends that supposedly create individuality but end up devaluing the furniture. Hemnes is already a finished, solid design that doesn’t need unnecessary changes. It’s better to buy high-quality additions than to struggle with homemade solutions.

I agree, although I would even prioritize visual clarity higher—a cluttered Hemnes shelf has no charm for me.

Also, painting the furniture makes little sense in my opinion: it destroys the original wood surface and can make the look appear cheap. Better to use cushions, rugs, and lighting cleverly to give the living room character.

But of course, taste varies. Anyone who really needs storage should measure carefully and not just upgrade randomly.
