Hello everyone,

I am looking for practical ideas on how to best adapt and use Ikea Hemnes furniture specifically for small bedrooms. My room is about 9 m² (97 square feet), and I want to make the most of the available storage without making the space feel cluttered or cramped.

I am especially interested in clever modifications, combinations, or additional pieces from the Hemnes range or similar that work well in small rooms. Tips on the best layout or on finding storage solutions that do not disrupt the overall look would also be greatly appreciated.

Has anyone gathered experience with adapting, for example, the Hemnes bed, wardrobes, or dressers to fit limited space? Ideally, I am looking for suggestions that are both practical and visually appealing.

Thanks in advance for your ideas and advice!

Hello domagoj,

To make the best use of Ikea HEMNES furniture in small bedrooms, I recommend the following approach:

- Choose multifunctional furniture, for example, the HEMNES bed with an integrated storage box for extra storage space.
- Position dressers (e.g., 6-drawer models) either as room dividers or as slim storage solutions along the walls instead of using wide wardrobes.
- Make effective use of vertical surfaces: HEMNES wall shelves or hooks add storage without taking up floor space.
- Place furniture as close to the walls as possible to keep enough open space in the center of the room.
- Keep furniture and wall colors light to make the room appear larger.

The HEMNES range is classic and sturdy, making it easy to complement with custom storage systems.

Furthermore, accurate room measurements are important to avoid choosing furniture that is too large.

If you have specific measurements of your furniture, I can also help you with a customized layout.

Hello domagoj,

I would like to add a few points because optimizing storage in small bedrooms can be quite complex.

Here is a simple step-by-step guide on how to adapt the Ikea HEMNES furniture effectively:

- Step 1: Measure the room and transfer existing furniture onto scale drawings.
- Step 2: Choose a HEMNES bed with storage underneath (drawers or a storage box) to avoid needing extra space.
- Step 3: Dressers with multiple drawers work well because they offer flexible storage and don’t appear bulky, especially if they are slim.
- Step 4: Wall shelves or rail hooks from the HEMNES range allow vertical storage of items such as books, accessories, or clothing.

Common mistakes when optimizing small rooms:
- Using furniture that is too large or wide, which takes up unnecessary space.
- Placing furniture in the middle of the room instead of close to the walls.
- Using dark colors, making the room appear smaller.

Summary:
- Focus on wall proximity and vertical storage
- Multifunctional furniture with hidden storage
- Light-colored furniture and a uniform look

I hope this helps.

The HEMNES bed with storage boxes underneath is definitely the best space saver.

Exactly, maximizing wall space is important.

Also, dressers can be stacked higher if they are sturdy enough.

Why not share your exact measurements? Then we can make more precise recommendations.

Thanks for the input. My bedroom is 3 m (10 feet) long and 3 m (10 feet) wide, so it’s square. The ceiling height is about 2.6 m (8.5 feet). At the moment I have a HEMNES bed that is 140 cm (55 inches) wide and a six-drawer dresser measuring 81 x 96 cm (32 x 38 inches), plus two wall shelves that I’d like to reposition more effectively.

My idea was maybe to place the bed against one wall and the dresser opposite, but I’m missing a clever plan to avoid making the room feel cramped. The wall shelves are rather short (90 cm / 35 inches wide) — I’m considering mounting them higher to better use the wall space.

Are there recommendations on how to arrange furniture with this layout in the most efficient way so that I still have enough room to move around and the bedroom feels airy?
