Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to install my new IKEA Metod kitchen in an L-shape and have a few questions about the best approach. Specifically, I want to know how to best arrange and assemble the base cabinets and wall cabinets to ensure the workflow in the kitchen is as efficient as possible. What should I keep in mind when measuring and aligning, especially at the corner where the L-shape connects? Are there practical tips for stability, for example regarding how to fasten the cabinets to each other and to the wall?
Additionally, I would like to know if there are recommended strategies for neatly integrating the electrical and plumbing connections in the corner solution without compromising accessibility or storage space later on.
I have some experience with furniture assembly, but this particular project seems quite challenging. I would greatly appreciate any specific experiences, tips, or advice about common pitfalls when installing a Metod L-shaped kitchen!

The most important step is to take precise measurements first, especially the angles in the corners. Cabinets must be aligned on a horizontal level. For connecting the L-shape, a special corner connector set, like the one IKEA offers for Metod, is recommended. Don’t forget wall mounting, especially for tall wall cabinets.
Hello solopi,
When installing the IKEA Metod kitchen unit in an L-shape, I recommend the following steps:
- First, measure the room and all walls very precisely, including the corner, to check if it is really 90 degrees or slightly angled.
- Before assembling the cabinets, check the floor level and, if necessary, level it with shims so the cabinets do not wobble.
- Align and securely screw the base cabinets on the longer side first.
- For the corner, use special corner cabinets (such as the carousel cabinet), which are ideal to plan in to make the most of the storage space.
- Always connect the cabinets to each other, not just attach them to the wall; this provides greater stability.
- Install the wall cabinets only after the base cabinets are in place, mounting them with mounting brackets on the wall and aligning carefully.
- Plan electrical and plumbing connections precisely before installation, so you can route outlets or hookups discreetly inside or behind the cabinets.
Common mistakes:
- Base cabinets are not at the same height, causing problems with countertops and sliding doors.
- Insufficient wall clearance or incorrect angles, leading to issues with cabinet doors.
Summary: Accurate measurements, secure cabinet connections to each other and the wall, and careful planning of connections ensure everything fits perfectly.

Timmyse366 Oct 2021 16:12Thanks for the helpful tips so far. I personally had a lot of stress assembling my L-shaped kitchen with Metod, mainly because I measured the corner incorrectly. The cabinets ended up misaligned, and I had to take almost everything apart again.
What I can recommend is to really take your time when leveling and repeatedly check for evenness with a spirit level. It might also be a good idea to assemble everything temporarily first before fully tightening all the screws.
Regarding the electrical work: I found it extremely helpful to route all cables for outlets and lighting carefully before assembly and to mark their positions clearly – this makes you much more flexible later on.

Are there any practical tips for stability, for example regarding the attachment of the cabinets to each other and to the wall? For maximum stability, I recommend:
- Always connect the cabinets directly to each other using the connection materials provided by IKEA.
- Additionally, use wall anchors that are securely fixed in the wall (e.g., wall plugs for concrete or cavity anchors for drywall).
- Align the cabinets precisely with a spirit level and adjust the legs of the base cabinets so the countertop sits perfectly level.

Regarding electrical and plumbing connections:
- Be sure to plan a detailed layout of the connections before assembly.
- Use cable channels inside the cabinets to route cables invisibly.
- For water connections, angle valves are helpful to make components more accessible.
A thorough preparation prevents later modifications and makes maintenance easier.

Base cabinets are not at the same height, so countertops and sliding doors won’t fit properly. This is an important point. I would also add that, especially with the L-shaped layout, you need to pay close attention to how the countertops join at the corner. Even a slight misalignment can result in a gap.
Additionally:
- When choosing the corner, consider corner cabinets with carousel or LeMans pull-out shelves to make good use of the space.
- Avoid collision points between doors and cabinet elements in the corner area.
- If possible, plan sufficient clearance behind the sink and stove in case water connections or electrical installations are needed.
For the installation: Use a stable leveling tool or laser level; this really helps with angles and alignment.
Thorough planning and following the points above will ensure a smooth installation and good functionality.
