Hello everyone, I’m moving soon and want to install Billy shelves in my new rental apartment, but unfortunately, I’m not allowed to use wall anchors or drill any holes. I still want my shelf to be stable and not tip over, as I plan to put books and some decorative items on it. Does anyone know how to securely fix Billy shelves without any anchors or drilled holes? I would appreciate tips that also work on rather smooth walls, since there is no textured wallpaper or anything similar. Thank you in advance for your experiences or suggestions!

Hello taylan60, that is a very reasonable question! When using tension rods for ceilings, permanent marks usually do not occur if soft rubber pads are used, which are included – these distribute the pressure and protect the surface. It is important to adjust the tension carefully to avoid excessive stress.

Alternatively, you can also consider furniture wedges or non-slip mats between the shelf and the floor. Often, several methods are combined: the shelves stand securely without slipping and are additionally secured against tipping with a tension rod. For adhesive tape, I recommend brands like 3M VHB, which have strong adhesion but can still be removed cleanly if the instructions are followed.

If you like, I can share some product recommendations from my experience here!

Thanks, that sounds great. Yes, product recommendations would be excellent! Especially for first-time users, it's helpful to know exactly what to look out for. What about the weight capacity of the shelves? I’d like to accommodate around 20–30 kilograms (44–66 pounds) per shelf if possible, mostly books, which require stronger support.

That is feasible if you properly secure the shelving unit to prevent tipping. The combination of non-slip mats underneath, a ceiling-mounted or corner tension rod at the top, and a reinforced back panel is crucial. Avoid relying solely on adhesive solutions for that amount of weight, as that can become risky over time. Under these conditions, the shelf will stand securely and the structure will support the load well.
