LupukenHello everyone,
I’m moving into a new rental apartment soon and would like to install BILLY shelves from IKEA. Since drilling into walls is usually not allowed in rental properties, I’m looking for proven methods or alternatives to securely and stably mount the shelves without drilling. It’s important to me that the solution ensures the shelves’ load capacity while being removable later with minimal damage when I move out.
Does anyone have experience mounting BILLY shelves without wall drilling? Are there specific tension or clamp devices, or perhaps furniture connectors, that can be used? I’m also interested in whether the stability can be maintained so that heavy books or decorations can be stored reliably.
I would appreciate detailed tips, specific product recommendations, or advice on possible risks and limitations of these alternative methods.
Thanks in advance!

Hello Lupuken,
There are actually several practical ways to install BILLY shelves in rental apartments without drilling. The most common method is using tension poles that are wedged between the floor and ceiling. These can support some weight and prevent the shelves from tipping over. It is essential that the tension mechanism works securely and creates enough friction to keep everything in place.
Another option is clamp brackets or special furniture anchors that hold the shelves against the wall without plugs and can be removed without leaving any residue. Some people also use double-sided, extra-strong mounting tapes (e.g., 3M “Command”) for light loads. However, these are not suitable for heavy weight.
When it comes to stability for heavy books, you should consider whether a shelving system without fixed wall mounting is safe enough, as shelves can shift or tip over time. You might want to build a combination of tension poles at the bottom and clamp anchors at the top to increase stability.
Finally, I recommend checking with your landlord in advance which methods are allowed to be on the safe side in case of any disputes.
Best regards.

Hi Lupuken,
From my experience, I can only recommend using telescopic poles or tension rods that extend from floor to ceiling. This method uses pressure to provide reliable support without damaging the wall. Since many BILLY shelves have a flat back panel, you can also add non-slip rubber pads underneath to prevent the shelves from sliding.
That matches my experience. Even more important is that your floor and ceiling are as level and flat as possible so the tension mechanism works properly. Otherwise, the shelf might wobble or fail to stay in place.
There are also special adhesive kits suitable for light to medium-weight fixing. These can be an interesting alternative if you don’t fully load the shelves.
If you want to be completely safe, you might negotiate with your landlord in some apartments to allow proper drilling. An open conversation could be worthwhile.
I hope this helps you! 🙂

I’ve done this several times myself – my absolute recommendation is to use these telescopic poles combined with small anti-slip pads under the shelf. It provides great stability and doesn’t leave any holes in the walls!
That’s absolutely true! Sometimes it really makes a difference if you support the pole at the right points with foam pads to prevent squeaking or slipping.
And hey, you can easily take the shelf down whenever you want – no more worries about trouble with the landlord! 🙂
Give it a try, I’m sure it will work! Good luck! 😉
