I am planning to build an Ikea Metod kitchen unit that offers both a lot of storage space and a high level of comfort. It is important to me that the kitchen is not only functional but also efficient in its use of the available space. My specific question is: Which cabinet types, accessories, and design options are recommended with Ikea Metod to optimize the kitchen unit for storage while also improving ergonomics during use? I am particularly interested in how base cabinets and wall cabinets can be best combined, which types of drawers have proven effective, and which internal fittings provide extra comfort. Additionally, it would be helpful to get tips on how to best design typical problem areas such as blind corners or narrow niches. I appreciate all experiences, product recommendations, and detailed planning advice!

For maximum storage utilization, I recommend base cabinets with drawers and full-extension slides. These allow easy access to the entire contents, unlike traditional hinged doors.

For blind corners, so-called “corner carousels” or “magic corners” are very suitable, as they make the storage space in corner units efficiently accessible. For wall cabinets, models with vertical compartments and internal drawers are useful since they better organize storage in height.

Ergonomics are improved by worktop heights adapted to the user’s body size; adjustable feet and well-placed work surfaces are crucial here.

Accessories such as inner drawers, shelves with non-slip mats, and cutlery inserts further enhance convenience.

Regarding storage and comfort in Metod kitchen units, based on my experience, careful planning of the cabinet interior organization is essential.

1. Base cabinets: I recommend fully extendable drawers with various divisions, especially wide drawers with inserts for pots and pans. The smooth-running Metod drawers with soft-close mechanisms allow very convenient access.

2. Wall cabinets: Vertical panels or inner drawers increase flexibility and allow storage of tall items. A small tip: fronts with glass can help quickly overview the contents.

3. Corners: For blind corners, the "Magic Corner" system works very well, as it makes full use of the available space. However, it requires some installation effort.

4. Ergonomics: Not only the working height is important, but also the arrangement of zones. My recommendation: arrange the sink, stove, and work surface in a triangle to enable short distances.

5. Accessories: Inner pull-outs for waste separation, adjustable shelves, and pull-out racks increase comfort and storage capacity.

A question: What exact measurements and room conditions are available? That way, I could provide more targeted solutions.

What are the exact dimensions and room conditions?

Good point. The kitchen is approximately 3.8 meters (12.5 feet) long and about 2.5 meters (8.2 feet) wide. The ceiling height is 2.4 meters (7.9 feet). An L-shaped layout is planned due to the open floor plan, with base cabinets and work surface on the longer side, and upper cabinets and appliances on the shorter side.

Dead corners will be addressed with cabinets featuring a Magic Corner or a similar pull-out system. I was thinking of a 60 cm (24 inch) depth for the base cabinets to provide enough space without making the kitchen feel too bulky. The working height would be about 92 cm (36 inches), as I am 1.82 meters (6 feet) tall.

The central question remains: How should I organize the interior fittings of the cabinets to maximize practical storage, especially for cookware, spices, and food items? Which configurations have proven to be particularly comfortable in everyday use?

How can I organize the interior of cabinets to maximize storage space practically, especially for cooking utensils, spices, and food items?

For cooking utensils, interior pull-out drawers with adjustable dividers are a good option, as they make both retrieving and storing items easier. Spices are ideally stored in dedicated revolving carousels or narrow shelf inserts inside the cabinet.

I store food items best in deep drawers with transparent containers, which helps keep things visible and organized. Modular inserts can be used to divide the drawers effectively.

Additionally, I recommend using hanging rails for frequently used utensils on the backsplash area above the countertop—this saves cabinet space and improves access.

Dead corners should be equipped with magic corner systems, which make it easier to use otherwise hard-to-reach spaces.

It’s important to plan the interior layout in advance based on lists of frequently used items to customize the cabinet configuration accordingly.
