I am currently planning to build an IKEA Metod kitchen unit and want to focus strongly on ergonomics. I understand that designing a kitchen unit depends not only on the dimensions but also on optimizing workflows and avoiding unnecessary strain during movements. My specific question is: What basic principles should be considered when building a Metod kitchen unit to ensure it is ergonomically effective? I am particularly interested in tips regarding the proper work surface height, the practical arrangement of cabinets and appliances, and how to minimize excessive bending or twisting while working in the kitchen. I plan to combine different cabinet heights and would also like to know how to balance storage space and accessibility effectively. Thank you for any helpful advice or personal experiences!

Countertop height at 91-96 cm (36-38 inches), depending on your body height.
Sink, cooktop, and work surfaces arranged in a triangle layout.
Cabinets with pull-out drawers instead of doors for easier access.
Use corner solutions for better storage space and reachable corners.

That sounds like an exciting project, especially since kitchen ergonomics are often underestimated. I installed my own Metod kitchen unit and realized how important it is to consider your own movements. For example, I adjusted my countertop height to fit my body size, which made a big difference in comfort.

I also planned the drawers for appliances and everyday items to be deeper so I don’t have to stretch constantly. For storage, it was crucial for me to keep frequently used items at reachable height, while the “deep cabinets” are mainly for less frequently used appliances. You’ll notice how much more enjoyable it is when your kitchen adapts to you instead of the other way around.

If you like, I can also share more about how I organized the area around the cooktop, sink, and waste bins. Sometimes you only realize afterward what you overlooked during planning – so it’s better to prevent that.

In my experience, the working height should be adjusted to your body height (tall = about 96 cm (38 inches), short = closer to 86 cm (34 inches)).
Arrange the stove, sink, and refrigerator in an ergonomic triangle to keep walking distances short.
Use pull-out cabinets for better visibility and easy access.
Use wall cabinets sparingly or choose ones with lift-up doors to avoid frequent stretching.
