Hello everyone, I am currently planning an IKEA Metod kitchen island that should provide not only workspace but also additional storage. I am particularly interested in the best way to combine and assemble the Metod base units to create an island with high stability and as much usable space as possible. It is also important to me whether special attention should be paid during the assembly of the kitchen island to its connection with the rest of the kitchen—especially regarding the utility connections (electricity, water) and structural stability. Who has experience with assembling and installing Metod kitchen islands and can offer tips on how to best integrate extra drawers, shelves, or pull-outs? Additionally, are there any recommended solutions to optimally balance storage capacity and walkway width during the planning phase? Thanks for your advice!

Hey Carelvin, great question! 😄 Building a kitchen island with plenty of storage using Metod modules is really fun, and there are lots of cool options! I would recommend paying special attention to sturdy bases and strong corner connectors during assembly to ensure the island is really stable. You can easily combine additional drawers or pull-outs with Metod drawer fronts and soft-close rail systems – this makes the kitchen feel really high-quality! 🙂

What I did for my kitchen island: I arranged base cabinets with pull-outs side by side and then mounted a fixed countertop on top. It’s important that the countertop is well supported, for example with extra braces or sturdy side panels. And don’t get discouraged if it feels a bit complicated at first! You’ll definitely manage it. Coordinating the layout of the modules well with the kitchen (especially water and electricity) makes everything much easier. Good luck, it’s going to be great! 👌

Hello Carelvin,

arrange the modules in the desired layout, making sure the connections are secured with the original Metod connectors. Drawers offer better storage space than doors because they make more efficient use of the space. The countertop should also be fixed using strong wood glue or screws. Electrical connections must be planned before assembly, and if necessary, hire a qualified electrician.

Hello Carelvin,

your question is very well thought out! I would recommend paying attention to the following points during planning:

- Selection of Metod base cabinets: Choose between deep drawers or classic doors with internal shelves depending on your storage needs.
- Connections: Use the supplied Metod corner connectors, and for larger islands, also connection braces for added stability.
- Worktop: Make sure it runs continuously over all modules, preferably a thicker worktop fixed with mounting clips.
- Utilities: If water or electricity will be integrated into the island, flexible lines are necessary; plan the distances accordingly.
- Clearances: For practical use, the distance to adjacent kitchen fronts should be at least 100cm (40 inches).

I have built several kitchen islands with Metod myself and can assure you that with good planning, a lot of storage space can be created. If you like, I can also provide you with a list of possible cabinets and accessories.

That’s exactly crucial! I underestimated it at first and had to readjust later due to slight movements. It’s best to choose a solid countertop as well; otherwise, it tends to wobble more easily.

+1 for the clearances, a 100 cm (39 inches) walkway really pays off – otherwise, cooking space quickly feels cramped! And if you plan to use the island for chopping or as a breakfast bar, a few extra centimeters won’t hurt. So Carelvin, keep up the good work, the island will turn out perfect! 🚀

Hello everyone,

I can only agree with Carelvin – a kitchen island with plenty of storage really makes a difference. At first, I was a bit nervous because I wasn’t sure if the units would be stable enough for a freestanding island. But with the right corner connectors and additional cross braces, it held up well.

I had some minor concerns about integrating the electrical connections, thinking it would be complicated. In hindsight, it was easier than expected, as long as you discuss the exact layout with an electrician beforehand.

It is also important during installation to ensure everything is perfectly level, otherwise the countertop will sag. And careful planning of the drawers can really create a lot of storage space.

Good luck with your project, it’s definitely worth it!
