Anda33Hello everyone,
I am facing the challenge of installing IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets in a rather tight space. The goal is to make the best use of the available area without sacrificing much storage capacity. Specifically, this is a kitchen with limited width and some angled walls, where I want to create as much storage as possible for dishes, pots, and pantry items despite the spatial constraints.
I have already considered a few basic concepts, such as using corner solutions, built-in cabinets with pull-outs, and combining wall cabinets with taller base cabinets. However, I have not yet managed to get the optimum out of the standard dimensions of the Metod series.
My question to the community is:
How can I plan and install IKEA Metod cabinets efficiently in a limited space to maximize storage while maintaining easy access and usability of all compartments? I would appreciate tips on planning, proven combination options, smart space utilization (e.g., niches, corners), as well as suggestions for possible additions or accessories that can expand storage capacity in a confined area.
Thanks in advance for your experiences and advice!

How can I efficiently plan and install the IKEA Metod cabinets in a limited space to maximize storage capacity while keeping accessibility and usability of all compartments optimal?Hello Anda33,
I love this challenge! The Metod series is really great because it’s so flexible – you can get a lot out of it! Here are some tips from my own experience on how to maximize storage in a small space:
- Definitely use tall cabinets: Instead of several short cabinets, choose a tall cabinet with smart internal pull-outs to make the most of the height. You can also reach the top edge easily with a step stool.
- Corner cabinets with carousel or LeMans pull-outs are real space-savers since they make optimal use of corners instead of having “dead” corner space.
- Narrow pull-outs next to the stove or refrigerator: For spices, baking trays, or bottles, there are slim, tall pull-outs that waste very little space.
- Wall cabinets up to the ceiling, possibly adding extra shelves.
- Inside the doors, attach hooks or small boxes to keep items easily accessible.
And remember: IKEA’s planning software is great but sometimes has its limitations – I also sketch on paper to test different layouts.
Good luck! You can do it! 🙂

How can I efficiently plan and install the IKEA Metod cabinets in a restricted space to maximize storage capacity while maintaining optimal accessibility and usability of all compartments? From a planning perspective, it is essential to first accurately measure the floor area and any existing constraints. The Metod series offers modular components that allow for customized combinations. The following points should be considered:
- Precise use of room height, including effectively utilizing niches and corners.
- Use of corner cabinets with hinged doors or carousel pull-outs to avoid wasted corner space.
- Incorporation of tall cabinets with internal pull-outs to maximize storage in small footprints.
- Combining cabinet depths: for example, wall cabinets at 40cm (16 inches) depth and base cabinets at 60cm (24 inches) depth to create an optimal staggered depth.
- Installation of special solutions such as internal pull-outs, pull-out shelves, and cutlery inserts for improved space utilization.
Accessibility is ensured when door sizes, clearance areas, and opening arcs are carefully planned in advance. Various manufacturer planning tools are recommended for this, along with physical sketches.
Additionally, it can be worthwhile to plan complementary custom joinery solutions if the building conditions are highly irregular.

I have already considered a few basic concepts, such as using corner solutions, built-in cabinets with pull-outs, and combining wall cabinets with tall base cabinets.Hello,
to find the truly best solution for limited space with the IKEA Metod series, it is important to analyze the room geometry in great detail before selecting the individual components. In case of limited space, for example in narrow and angled kitchens, I recommend a three-step approach:
1. Precise measurement of all walls, windows, radiators, and clearance areas. Document any wall recesses or angles with as accurate measurements as possible.
2. Creation of a to-scale CAD drawing or at least a hand-drawn plan.
3. Selection of Metod components according to the measured dimensions:
- For corners: use the so-called "Magic Corner" systems or LeMans corner cabinets – these allow the interior to extend optimally. Pay special attention to the required leg dimensions of at least 90x90 cm (35x35 inches).
- Tall cabinets: a classic storage solution for years. Make sure to consider the modular interior fittings with pull-out shelves and baskets. This way, even upper storage is used effectively and remains accessible.
- Wall cabinets: narrow cabinets with adjustable internal heights and shelves are advantageous, allowing you to configure storage heights for dishes and glasses.
- Cabinet depth: the standard depth for Metod base cabinets is 60 cm (24 inches), while wall cabinets also come in 40 cm (16 inches) depth, which can be very helpful in tight spaces.
- Use drawers in base cabinets instead of just doors. Drawers provide better access, especially when space is limited.
My tip: Plan the interiors completely with the respective pull-outs and note the dimensions of frequently used items, so you don’t just focus on the outer shell but also optimize usage.
What does your room layout look like in detail? Are there differences in wall height, or do windows/radiators affect the layout?
I am happy to assist further with your planning if you share more details.
