Good morning everyone, I have a question about readjusting the dresser drawers of my Malm wardrobe from IKEA. The drawers no longer close properly and sometimes get stuck, plus they are slightly misaligned. I would like to know the best way to adjust the drawers myself without damaging the runners. Are there specific adjustment screws or mechanisms I should be aware of? I would appreciate a detailed guide, as I want to avoid removing and reassembling the drawers if possible. Thanks in advance!
Hello senon39, I’m happy to help with some basics. The Malm dresser drawers have metal runners on both sides, which are mounted laterally. These usually include small wheels or plastic guides, which are sometimes adjustable.
To make adjustments, you can fully pull out the drawer to access the adjustment screws on the rail mounting. If the drawer sticks, a slight height adjustment is usually needed.
Sometimes it also helps to check the guide rails on the dresser itself – they might be slightly misaligned. If the drawer no longer closes properly, you can adjust the rail at the back, where there are often small screws.
I’m happy to explain the individual steps in more detail if you want.

Can you loosen the screw on each side that holds the rail? Thanks for the tip. Is there a specific order, like loosening the left side first and then the right? And how exactly do you adjust the drawer: horizontally, vertically, or more in small diagonal movements?

If the drawer sticks, usually a slight height adjustment is needed. That sounds important. Is it really only possible to adjust the height using the screws on the rail, or is there another option, for example, adjustment screws in the plastic guides? I’d rather avoid breaking anything.
The Malm drawers are designed so that the rails are fixed to the side panel with small metal screws. Adjustment is done by loosening these screws and then sliding the rail, mainly horizontally and vertically, to align the drawer.
Often, the plastic guides on the drawer are not adjustable but only serve as sliding bearings. Make sure not to twist the rails too much. Proper alignment is important to ensure smooth movement.
One more tip: Sometimes it helps to remove the drawer completely and check the rails on the dresser to ensure they are securely and evenly mounted before making adjustments.

Hi, it’s great that you want to tackle this yourself! 🙂 I also had issues with my Malm dresser, and as mentioned, the solution is to loosen and slightly adjust the side rails.
I completely removed the drawers, then loosened the screws on the sides a bit and shifted the rails up or down. After tightening everything again, the drawers fit perfectly!
Go ahead and give it a try—it’s really rewarding when the drawers finally slide smoothly again. Good luck!
